Police: Mother, teen son shoplifted from Rock Hill store
A woman and her teenage son worked together to shoplift from a Rock Hill store, according to Rock Hill Police.
Officers responded to Academy Sports + Outdoors about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, where the suspect and her 14-year-old son had entered earlier, according to a police report.
The boy picked up a $95 pair of shoes to try on, walked to another section and set the box on the floor, police said. He was later seen putting the shoe box on the floor and putting on his high school wrestling sweat shirt, which had his last name on the back.
The mother watched out for store employees as the boy pushed the shoe box under a rack, police said. She walked over and said something to him and he walked away. She then removed tags off some merchandise and put the tags in her pocket as they walk out of the store.
Surveillance footage showed the pair “doing something in the trunk of the car” and re-enter the store with merchandise to return, the report states. They returned some items and received about $48.
Store employees later realized the merchandise they returned was not from the store, police said. Inside the shoe box that the teen slid under a rack, they found an old, worn down pair of shoes. He had reportedly put the new shoes on and walked out of the store.
Officers have obtained warrants for the mother for shoplifting and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, investigators say. The teenager will be issued a juvenile summons.
