Northwestern’s Larry Davis resigns

Northwestern boys’ basketball coach Larry Davis resigned Wednesday morning.

Davis went 31-19 – including a 17-8 mark in Region 3-4A games – during his two years at the helm of the Trojans program after arriving from Lewisville in April 2013. During his brief tenure in charge of the Lions, Davis led Lewisville to a 1A basketball state title.

A statement sent by Northwestern athletics director Lauren West said that “Davis has decided to relinquish his positions at NHS to pursue a collegiate coaching career.” West wasn’t expecting Davis’ resignation but said she knew he had aspirations of coaching at a higher level.

Davis starred at Denmark-Olar and still holds a number of state prep scoring records. He began his college career at North Carolina before transferring to South Carolina for his final two seasons. He scored over 1,000 points each of his two seasons with the Gamecocks. Davis then played professionally in Europe, South America and Asia.

Davis, who was Northwestern’s in-school suspension coordinator, didn’t return phone calls or a text message. West’s statement added that the Northwestern administration “will work swiftly yet diligently to determine the best plan of action to ensure the boys basketball program remains competitive on the local and state level.”
