Panthers, Cam Newton offer up 7-on-7 competition
A handful of local high school football teams headed up I-77 to Charlotte on Friday to compete in a pair of 7-on-7 tournaments.
Northwestern drank in the Charlotte skyline - and plenty of H2O - at the Carolina Panthers’ practice facility while playing in the NFL team’s 7-on-7 tournament against competition from across the Carolinas. And Lancaster, South Pointe, Nation Ford and York were across town at Providence Day School for the first of two days of competition in the Cam Newton 7-on-7 regional.
Northwestern had an uneven morning at the Panthers tournament, which included Carolinas heavyweights like Mallard Creek, Wake Forest Rolesville, Myrtle Beach and others, and entered the knockout portion of the tournament as the eighth seed. Things clicked then for the Trojans as they pushed past Davidson Day and Wake Forest, before falling to Westside in the championship game.

At Providence Day, York had the best first day of the local teams, going unbeaten in six games with a tie against Fort Dorchester the only non-win. The Cougars, South Pointe, Lancaster and Nation Ford will all take part in the elimination portion of the Cam Newton tournament Saturday morning, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
