Man charged with passing stopped Charlotte school bus, hitting student

A 33-year-old Charlotte man was charged with two felonies for hitting an elementary school student getting on a bus Thursday morning and fleeing the scene after, according to court records.

Adarias Steffon Oliver passed a stopped school bus in northeast Charlotte at 6:52 a.m. when he hit the boy, pulling him underneath Oliver’s vehicle, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police affidavit said.

“The driver, who ignored the red lights on the bus that were clearly visible, drove around that bus and struck this child,” said Maj. Brad Koch in a video posted by CMPD on social media. “That individual fled the scene.”

Drivers traveling both directions on two and four-lane roadways must stop for a school bus when it stops and activates its lights and signs, according to N.C. law. Drivers both directions must stop on two-lane roadway with a center turning lane as well.

The student, who attends University Meadows Elementary School, was not seriously injured, Koch said. Oliver, who was driving a 2015 white Dodge Charger, returned to the scene at 7:03 a.m. where he was arrested, the affidavit said.

Oliver was also charged with reckless driving, driving without a license, and cited for an expired tag.

He was booked in the Mecklenburg County Jail with two $100,000 bonds set for the felony charges, court records said.
