McCelvey Center’s 2018 Southern Sound Series lineup announced
The 2018 Southern Sound Series is ready to roll at the McCelvey Center’s Lowry Family Theatre, 212 E. Jefferson St. Dedicated to providing authentic contemporary performances, the series showcases musical genres that are steeped in the multi-cultural origins of the Carolinas.
The season lineup includes Nikki Lane, the Steel Wheels, the Mark O’Connor Band and Rhiannon Giddens. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.
The 2018 Southern Sound Series lineup:
Nikki Lane, Jan. 20
Nikki Lane is a country-pop artist known as the ‘First Lady of Outlaw Country.’ Born and raised in the South Carolina Upstate, Lane conjures up the region’s musical traditions with a country-rebel attitude. Nominated as an emerging artist of the year in 2015 by Americana Music Association, Lane has three albums that have peaked the charts. “Highway Queen,” released in early 2017, crisscrosses musical genres and showcases Lane’s ability to captivate. In April, Lane and her band’s live performance in Loretta Lynn’s living room for CBS’ Saturday Sessions sealed-the-deal for her trajectory to stardom.
The Steel Wheels, Feb. 17
From Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, the Steel Wheels roll out a straightforward Americana sound. All four members of the band grew up in Mennonite families, which might explain their off-the-grid eminence. The Steel Wheels’ “Nothing You Can’t Lose” hailed as Best Country Song in the 10th Annual Independent Music Awards and “Working on a Building” won Best Gospel Song in the fan-determined category. The quartet’s tenth album, “Wild as We Came Here,” was released in May and is the band’s first recording to include keyboards and drums.
The Mark O’Connor Band, March 17
Three-time Grammy Award winner Mark O’Connor is a gifted musician with a full-spectrum career. In 2017, the O’Connor Band’s “Coming Home” won a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. The Country Music Association named Mark O’Connor Musician of the Year for six years in a row from 1991 to 1996. In addition to recognition as a bluegrass and country music artist, O’Connor’s successes cross over various genres, including jazz and classical. As a versatile award-winning violinist and composer, Mark O’Connor has collaborated with numerous headliners ranging from the Dixie Dregs to Yo-Yo Ma. The O’Connor Band includes Mark O’Connor’s talented family members.
Rhiannon Giddens, April 27
Rhiannon Giddens continues to soar high as a roots-minded musician with a powerhouse voice. A native of Greensboro, N.C., Giddens attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she performed as a lyric coloratura soprano. Founding member of the Grammy Award winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, Giddens set course as a solo artist in 2013. Many awards later, including the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, induction to the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, Living Blues and International Folk Music Awards, and a Mac Arthur Fellowship, Giddens reigns as a music historian and contemporary showstopper.
