Aiming to be the queen of something, singer/songwriter Nikki Lane – live Saturday at McCelvey Center in York – has manifest that overall goal in her third album, “Highway Queen.” Released in mid-2017, it revealed Lane as a real deal musical entity, one with nervy ‘brass in pocket’ panache, that marks her as “special so special” and worthy of notice.

‘Highway Queen’ brought together creative forces and gave Lane a musical crown bedazzled with gems including compelling lyrics, charisma, not to mention a knack for visual flair. On this third album, she has found her voice, which did not go unnoticed, as shown by accolades from NPR, The Guardian and Rolling Stone. In April, Lane and her band performed live for CBS’ Saturday Sessions from Loretta Lynn’s living room.

Influences mixing Neil Young, Tom Petty, Flamin' Groovies, Waylon Jennings and Lucinda Williams with her mom’s Motown records and her dad’s country cassettes, along with her own alt-rock and punk ingredients developed her trademark sound. Not country or rock – it’s both, as well as bluesy in a Southern way with throwback cool and defiant flash. Lane’s personality, captivating musical character and genuine peculiarities come together also as quirky and authentic ensuring standout style. Her original line of work as a fashion entrepreneur/collector was a big boost, and continues still at High Class Hillbilly, her vintage clothing boutique in Nashville.

Call it all bravado, sass, talented vision, bold daring, a little luck – whatever. But once ignited, Lane meant to be her true self, stating “this was the first time in my career where I decided how things were going to go,” then adding, “I was willing to take the heat.”

Witness how influences, experiences and guts come together for Nikki Lane, live Saturday as part of the Southern Sound Series at The McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., in York. For concert information, call 803-684-3984 or check chmuseums.org. For more on the music, visit nikkilane.com.
