Special events

York County and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture will host a recycling and proper disposal of household hazardous materials and pesticides event 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 6 at the York County Public Works facility, 220 Public Works Road (off S.C. 5), near the Moss Justice Center, York. Accepted items are leftover cleaners, chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, oil-based paint, turpentine, paint thinner, mineral spirits, brake fluid and gas/oil mix. Empty pesticide containers will not be collected. Infectious, biological or radioactive materials and explosives are prohibited. The Chester County Historical Society annual banquet will be 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at The Chester County War Memorial Building. Joel Wyman Collins, Jr., a Chester native, Columbia attorney and Revolutionary War scholar, will discuss “The Southern Campaign of the American Revolution.” Door prizes and a raffle are included. Catered by Buttermilk’s Barbecue of Chester, cost is $30 per person. The Hunger Outreach Program churches will host a picnic, 6-7 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Flint Hill Baptist Church parking lot on Flint Hill Street, Rock Hill. Open to all area residents in conjunction with National Night Out. Hotdogs with all the fixings, chips, desserts and drinks will be served. Rain or shine. Applications for 2018 Rock Hill Christmas Parade will be available at 10 a.m. Sept. 19 at cityofrockhill.com/parade. The parade will be 6:30 p.m. Nov. 30 and will feature lighted floats and units celebrating the holiday season. Applications are also available at recreation centers and the City Hall PRT Office (Room 390). A limited number of entries will be being accepted, with entries being considered in the order in which they are submitted. Floats are available for rent at 803-329-5620. The York County Regional Chamber will host a local simulcast of the second annual Leadercast Women event on Oct. 12 at The Hood Center. Organizers say this program speaks to women in business, whether at the corporate level, as startups and entrepreneurs, or young professionals just starting to build their careers. Fundraisers

Inaugural fundraiser for Strides of Strength Therapeutic Riding will be 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Beaty Barn, 3102 Pinetuck Lanes, Rock Hill. There will be live music by the Oneppo Brothers and a barbecue. Details or tickets: 803-374-6255.

Rock Hill Music Club’s Scholarship benefit concert and reception, 3 p.m. Oct. 14 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Oakland Avenue. Local musicians who will perform in a variety of musical formats include vocalists Alice Craighead, Susanne Okey, and Sallie Pullano; flutist Maury Wilkinson; pianists Lannia Bronola-Dickert and Frank Pullano; guitarists L.H. Dickert and Matthew Johnston. Tickets are $10, available from club members or at the door. All proceeds will benefit local music students.

Breaking Chains, a fundraiser for Grounds of Grace, will be 5-7 p.m. Oct. 6 at Catawba Baptist Church, 1450 S. Anderson Road, Rock Hill. Grounds of Grace is a non-profit ministry in York County with a mission to provide a safe, Christ-centered environment that encourages spiritual, professional, and personal growth to transform the lives of women. Entertainment will be a mime ministry. Dinner tickets: $15 per person. Chrysalis Autism Center 6th annual golf tournament, Oct. 8 with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. at Rock Hill County Club, 600 Country Club Drive. Cost is $125 per player or $450 a foursome. The center provides support, guidance and educational services to families with children diagnosed with Autism. The goal is to raise $35,000 to assist more families.

OWLS community group will have its annual Chance auction, noon Oct. 6 at The Masonic Hall, 977 Crawford Road, Rock Hill. Drop time is 11 a.m.-noon. Prizes, food and fellowship.

Entertainment

Fort Mill Playhouse presents a capital campaign benefit featuring OTC Improv, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at the playhouse, 220 Main St. Tickets, $20 and include a light sandwich supper. The 12th annual Lando Days, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., June 6 at 3801 Lando Road in Lando will raise money to support the Lando-Manetta Mills History Center. Admission is free and handicap accessible. Activities include children’s games, self guided tours of the museum, classic car and motorcycle Cruise in, animals and a cat rescue, Chester Historical Society with the Chester Gun, 6th SC Volunteer Re-enactors drill and musket fire.
