Special events

Main Street Children’s Museum in Rock Hill is closed until further notice because of damage from a broken water main. The Museum of York County will host October programs including Wee Wednesdays at 10:30 each Wednesday and Boo-seum, 2-4 p.m. Oct. 31. Details: chmuseums.org.

Adult Enrichment Centers is celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month by launching High Five Works to provide employment services for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The grand opening and community open house will be 4-6 p.m. Oct. 8 at 410 Oakland Ave. Rock Hill. Congressman Ralph Norman and Rock Hill Mayor John Gettys will attend. York County and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture will host a recycling and proper disposal of household hazardous materials and pesticides event 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 6 at the York County Public Works facility, 220 Public Works Road (off S.C. 5), near the Moss Justice Center, York. Accepted items are leftover cleaners, chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, oil-based paint, turpentine, paint thinner, mineral spirits, brake fluid and gas/oil mix. Empty pesticide containers will not be collected. Infectious, biological or radioactive materials and explosives are prohibited. The Chester County Historical Society annual banquet will be 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at The Chester County War Memorial Building. Joel Wyman Collins, Jr., a Chester native, Columbia attorney and Revolutionary War scholar, will discuss “The Southern Campaign of the American Revolution.” Door prizes and a raffle are included. Catered by Buttermilk’s Barbecue of Chester, cost is $30 per person. Fundraisers

Chrysalis Autism Center 6th annual golf tournament, Oct. 8 with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. at Rock Hill County Club, 600 Country Club Drive. Cost is $125 per player or $450 a foursome. The center provides support, guidance and educational services to families with children diagnosed with Autism. The goal is to raise $35,000 to assist more families.

OWLS community group will have its annual Chance auction, noon Oct. 6 at The Masonic Hall, 977 Crawford Road, Rock Hill. Drop time is 11 a.m.-noon. Prizes, food and fellowship.

Those who want to participate in St. John’s United Methodist Church’s Children’s Spring and Summer annual consignment sale can call Beth at 803-548-6557 or email stjumcweeschool@gmail.com to get a consignor number and appointment for drop off Oct 9-10 at the church on Tom Hall Street, Fort Mill. The sale is open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 11-12 and 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 13, which most items half price. The sale features quality clothing and accessories, shoes, toys, books, furniture and equipment. Proceeds go to St. John’s WEE School.

Fort Mill Playhouse presents a capital campaign benefit featuring OTC Improv, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at the playhouse, 220 Main St. Tickets, $20 and include a light sandwich supper. North Chester Saddle Club will sponsor the North Chester Saddle Club Amateur Rodeo, 6 p.m. Oct. 6 at 1037 Tickle Hill Rd., Chester. Events include pee wee, youth and adult barrel racing and pole bending; ladies goat tying; break away roping; calf herding for kids; calf dressing; mutton bustin’ trophy class and open bull riding. The 12th annual Lando Days, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Oct. 6 at 3801 Lando Road in Lando will raise money to support the Lando-Manetta Mills History Center. Admission is free and handicap accessible. Activities include children’s games, self guided tours of the museum, classic car and motorcycle Cruise in, animals and a cat rescue, Chester Historical Society with the Chester Gun, 6th SC Volunteer Re-enactors drill and musket fire. Live Bands include the Oneppo Brothers, Christian Crossroads, Keith Mosley, Country Grass, and Dance Music by Keith Funderburk. Barbecue, hot dog and fish plates, homemade baked goods, tee shirts, and vendor items will be for sale. A dedication of a doctor’s buggy in memory of Dr. John N. Gaston Sr. will be at 9 a.m. Gaston lived in Edgemoor and drove a horse and buggy to Lando where his office was from 1900 till his death in 1954. He made house calls throughout his career. Fort Mill Community Playhouse presents a performed reading of “Harps and Harmonicas,” the story of two women on a road trip to pick up an inherited harp. Reunions

All graduates of Rosenwald Schools and African American church schools are invited to “Old School Daze,” 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Liberty Hill Rosenwald School, 3071 South Anderson Road (US 21) in Catawba. The event is to celebrate and recognize these important schools and learn about efforts to protect and preserve this school. All are welcome, but graduates will receive special recognition.

Emmett Scott High School Class of 1968 is celebrating its 50th reunion Oct. 5-7 with the following events: Meet & Greet reception, 2-4 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Comfort Suites in Rock Hill; leave at 4 p.m. for the Lady of the Lake dinner cruise at Lake Norman. “Our Journey Together and Beyond” will feature a banquet at the Café in the Flexible Learning Center from 6-11 p.m. Oct 6. Volunteers

Friends of York County Animal Shelter will have a volunteer orientation, 9-10 a.m. Oct. 13 and 4-5 p.m. Oct. 24 at the shelter, 713 Justice Blvd., York. Volunteers assist with exercising, socializing, providing adoptive information, publicity, marketing, public education, local volunteer transporting and other duties that will assist the animals and shelter staff.
