Melissa Gilbert Makes Shocking ‘Little House on the Prairie' Discovery That Connects Her to Laura Ingalls

Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert just uncovered a wild family coincidence that would've shocked Laura Ingalls Wilder: her birth father's middle name is the same nickname Laura famously used for her husband.

Ingalls affectionately called her husband, Almanzo, "Manly," a nickname in the show, which was based on the real-life nickname she used in her books. In the TV series, Almanzo, played by actor Dean Butler, begins as a strong, quiet farmer who eventually becomes Laura's love interest and husband.

Gilbert, who is adopted, posted on Instagram, "Thank you to my fifth cousin, @harleesco for being such a stalwart researcher. I also learned that my birth mother, Frances Catherineanne Wood (Cathy), was born on April 26, 1935. My mother, Barbara Gilbert-Cowan was born on April 26, 1936!!!!!! I'm going to turn comments back on for this one. It's just too coincidental and there might be other birth relatives out there who see it. If things get weird, or nasty, I'll turn them off again but I know there are so many people out there with similar stories and experiences. I'm compelled to share mine and want, very much, to hear yours."

A fan asked Gilbert if her birth parents were still alive, but unfortunately, she said they are not.

Gilbert previously shared that her birth father saw her on Little House and knew she was his daughter. Upon meeting him, she mentioned the enduring series. "I said, ‘Well, here's the thing… Did you ever watch Little House on the Prairie? And he said, ‘You're Laura, aren't you? I knew it.' He knew it," she revealed on actor Patrick Labyorteaux's podcast in 2025.

She continued, "He could see. And when I met my half-siblings, we all looked alike. So you could definitely see it… It's pretty clear." Gilbert, who was adopted by actors Barbara Cowan and Paul Gilbert, learned that her biological parents also worked in entertainment. Her biological birth mother was an exotic dancer, while her father was a stock car racer and musician.
