Chameleon-like in adaptability but unswerving in creative direction, Christina Raine is known to take on various configurations to deliver her musical revelations.
For this excursion, she is operating under the moniker of Square Roots Music performing live, Friday at The Brass Tap in Riverwalk, in Rock Hill. A duo featuring Raine, vocals/guitar along with LS Brown, vocals/guitar, bass, this is possibly her most laid-back, informal incarnation but don’t be fooled.
Regardless of format or lineup, setting or personnel, Raine can shift to just the right ‘fit’ needed. You see, she lives for this performance ‘thing’ so she makes it effective, regardless.
Based in this metro area, Raine combines rock and Americana in a Carolina-centric way. Smooth, straightforward, firm or crafty, soft even sly, there’s a unique sound that’s worthy. As a duo, they turn to songs from the 60s to current sounds along with original tunes.

The groove is soulful or jazzy, just whatever is needed. “This gig is a mixture of originals and covers, instrumentals, some straightforward playing, with some looping and some percussion thrown in,” Raine said. “We like to play songs that aren’t typical – stuff that takes you back, makes you tap your feet, it’s just an all-around good time.”
“I like it when the crowd interacts,” she continues, “I think they like the fact that it’s easy to see I enjoy doing what I do. And the interaction, teamwork with my partner LS Brown adds to it. They see it's not just a job, that we truly love it. It honestly brings me joy,” Raine admits, declaring, “Now that's Square Roots.”
