Mainstream rock returns to the Paladium Amphitheater at Carowinds with the double shot of hot rock from Daughtry live Thursday along with hard-hitting renegades 21st Century Goliath as opening guest.
Daughtry is fronted by Chris Daughtry, originally from McLeansville, N.C., who came to national fame rocking his way to the finals on the fifth season of American Idol.
He converted that musical momentum right into platinum territory when his self-titled debut album produced four Top 20 hits and sold more than f4 million copies becoming Billboard’s “Best Selling Album” for 2007. That triumphant launch, followed by successful resulting albums – including his most recent, “Baptized,” account for the band’s worldwide sales of over 30 million albums and over 80 million digital tracks downloaded.
The band is not a solo project or backup band, it is a full-fledged group effort just using the lead vocalist’s name for extra clout. The lineup also features Josh Paul, bass; Brian Craddock, guitar; Josh Steely, guitar; Robin Diaz, drums and Elvio Fernandes, keyboards. Together they fashion a rock-meets-pop rock sound with post-grunge punch rooted in ’70s and ’80s arena rock a la Van Halen, Bon Jovi and others.
Selling this aura, of course, is Daughtry himself, whose powerful, resonant voice enables and identifies the band overall. Likewise, his lighthearted, upbeat personal style not to mention that bold swagger that keeps things lively and agile but still potent enough to handle all anthemic requirements.
Meanwhile, 21st Century Goliath is along for the hard-rocking ride as guest openers keeping things risky but relevant. Heads up for this Charlotte band’s straight-on hard rock outfit that gives no quarter thanks to a two-guitar onslaught that’s as solid as it is elegant.
Loud and undeniably proud, their name tells the story of throwback rock meeting the future right in the present day with influences resting in classic grandeur.
The band 21st Century rallies together the forces of Tony Leone, vocals; Scott Roby, guitar; Kip Wilson, guitar; Adam Ellis, drums and Kenny Keeler, bass. Two albums – “Radio Destroyer -2012” followed by “Back With a Vengeance” in late 2014 – verify to their combined heavyweight rock skills.
Fist-pumping rock guaranteed for all from Daughtry plus 21st Century Goliath Thursday at The Paladium Amphitheater, Carowinds, 14523 Carowinds Blvd., Fort Mill-Charlotte.
