The All-Star Special Jazz Ensemble along with Chase Killough, will be live Saturday at the HopeFest Family Festival, 3-7 p.m. at The Shack, Winthrop Lake in Rock Hill.
They’ll add their talent to the fundraising benefit for A Place For Hope, the non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting, improving life for families and especially at-risk youth in the Blackmon Road Community of Rock Hill.
Saturday’s fundraiser is a multiple part family fun fest offers not only live music but special kids activities from face-painting and pottery to arts, crafts, and more. Also, take your best shot at the silent auction items. Treasures and merchandise for this auction come from an interesting array of donors including: Dean & Deluca, Whole Foods, White Water Center, Speedway Club, Tega Cay Golf, Reid’s Market, Yoga & Wellness, Beads, Inc. and more.
Of course, live music always adds to the fun. The All-Star Special is a jazz, funk and fusion ensemble based in the Rock Hill and Charlotte area. The band refers to their sound as “smothered, covered, and funked” which makes more sense when you discovder that their July, 2013 debut release is titled ‘Dipped in Mo’ Gravy.’ Mixing up this spicy concoction involves the skills of Martin Patrick, drums; Phillip Howe, trumpet/piano; Chris Mitchell, saxophone, Craig Bowman, guitar and Carey Walter, bass guitar.

Then, jump from jazz and funk to run into some down home country, folk, and rock from singer/songwriter/guitarist Chase Killough. A hometown Rock Hill musician, this young artist-in-development aims for ‘emotion’ when writing new songs hoping to ‘craft his own sound.’
He draws from several musical genres for inspiration, especially rock, bluegrass, and folk. Then, these different styles are loosely gathered together by Killough under a big inviting Southern acoustic banner.
His musical endeavors originally began playing mandolin which expanded to guitar, but he also admits a love for electric guitar and piano. He lists a number of musical influences including his grandfather – who taught him to play mandolin – to Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Elton John, and Neil Young. Killough recently was found around town during the Come See Me festival performing ‘funky twists’ on favorite tunes.
Get down with the funk and snazzy jazz from The All Star Special, plus some rock and country cool with Chase Killough, Saturday for a variety of fun from the HopeFest Family Festival at The Shack, Winthrop Lake, 579 University Lake Drive in Rock Hill.
