Ease into seasonal March bluster Saturday with the mixed bag of music from Shannon Lee, performing at Original Empire Pizza in Rock Hill.

Inspired by assorted genres, Lee is a singer. songwriter, storyteller and piano player whose mission is to “rock your soul.” To accomplish this, she can be found in myriad forms: solo, duo, trio, venturing into whatever venue possible to share her “simple music about this complicated life.”

Lee’s inspiration started with the pop/rock of the ’60s then stretched through the alt/rock of the ’90s. However, she avoids efforts to pin down specific influences, opting for a sweeping reference to “all of them.”

Based in the Charlotte area, Lee looks at life and the world at large to conceive her original tunes, then augments with a striking crisscross of covers from a lengthy but tasty menu of bands and artists when performing live.

Lee is often found with a colorful, changing array of artists while still keeping the act straightforward, even simple. She maintains that “sparse production lays bare the emotion in the music” especially when delving into “love, loss, heartache, redemption and family.”

Saturday night, Lee will explore that territory by “trading songs” with Kevin Marshall, a singer- songwriter active in the Charlotte-area music scene since the early ’90s. A founding member of the popular band The Wax Gurus, he currently fronts Kevin Marshall And The J-Walkers.

A bonanza of musical possibilities awaits from Shannon Lee along with Kevin Marshall on Saturday at Original Empire Pizza, 1415 Riverchase Blvd. Call 903-980-0522 or check Facebook for show details. For more on the music, visit simplyshannon.net and find her on Facebook.
