Here are the routes American Airlines is dropping from CLT, other airports in NC, SC
American Airlines is planning to drop 27 routes around the country, including at least two at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and four others around the Carolinas.
Effective April 5, American, the dominant air carrier at the Charlotte airport, will drop its Charlotte routes to Toledo and Champaign, Ill.
American is cutting at least 18 New York City routes, including four international routes from John F. Kennedy International Airport (to Costa Rica and Canadian destinations).
The airline isn’t dropping any routes between New York City and Charlotte, though the airline will drop routes between LaGuardia Airport and three Carolinas cities: to Asheville (effective March 27), Charleston (effective Jan. 4), and Myrtle Beach (effective June 2).
American will also drop its route between Boston and Raleigh-Durham International Airport effective Jan 4.
The airline canceled thousands of flights across the country in late October and early November. The airline blamed weather and staffing shortages. Since then, American has brought 1,800 flight attendants back from leave and announced holiday pay incentives to make holiday travel more reliable, airline officials said.
The Charlotte airport saw a steep drop in passenger numbers early last year as the coronavirus pandemic hit North Carolina.
But air travel numbers have largely recovered. In fact, Thanksgiving holiday travel numbers are nearly on par with pre-pandemic numbers from 2019, airport officials told reporters this week.
CLT’s busiest day is expected to be the Sunday following Thanksgiving, with 35,000 local passengers, compared with 38,000 in 2019, airport chief operating officer Jack Christine told reporters Tuesday.
