Do you need a learner’s permit to drive in NC if you’re over 18? What state law says
If you’re an adult in North Carolina without a driver’s license — and still want to get one — do you need a learner’s permit?
Here’s what to know.
Do I need a learner’s permit to drive in NC as an adult?
No. If you’re at least 18 years old, you can apply for a driver’s license in person at an N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles driver’s license office, according to NCDMV.
Applicants must pass knowledge, road sign recognition, vision and driving tests, and take the following documents to the office:
A document proving your identity and date of birth, such as a birth certificate or passport.
A Social Security card or document proving you have a Social Security number.
A document verifying your address, such as a vehicle registration card or utility bill.
A document showing your liability insurance coverage.
If you were born outside of the U.S., you’ll need a document proving your legal presence. (North Carolina is not one of the 19 states that allow people without legal status to get a driver’s license, The Tribune reported.)
However, individuals at least 18 years old can apply for a learner’s permit, NCDMV says.
What are the requirements to get an NC driver’s license if you’re under 18?
If you’re under 18, you can get a driver’s license through the state’s graduated licensing system, according to NCDMV.
At 15, you can apply for a limited learner’s permit, which you can get after passing a driver’s education course along with written, vision and sign tests. Limited leaner permits let you drive with a licensed driver between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m.
After you’ve had a limited learner’s permit for 9 months, logged at least 60 hours of driving and pass a road test, you can get your limited provisional license, which lets you drive between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. unsupervised.
Once you’ve had a limited provisional license for six months and logged at least 12 hours of driving, you can apply for a full provisional license, which lets you drive unsupervised at any time. At 18, full provisional licenses can be upgraded to Class C driver’s licenses online.
Is it safe to drive in North Carolina?
North Carolina recently landed at No. 6 on Lending Tree’s list of cities with the worst drivers. The report, which analyzed insurance inquiries over the last year, had nearly 40 driving incidents per 1,000 drivers. The state also had the third highest DUI rate per 1,000 drivers (2.9), behind Washington D.C. and California.
A study last year also found that Winston-Salem is the deadliest city in the nation for rush hour driving, The Charlotte Observer reported. According to the study, nearly a third (32%) of all traffic fatalities occur during the hours of 7-9 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. in Winston-Salem, which is 40% higher than the national average.
