A Canadian company will invest $56 million to build its first U.S. production facility in Charlotte’s Steele Creek community, creating 325 jobs.

AVL USA Inc. , a new company established by AVL Manufacturing based in Hamilton, Ontario, will build enclosures for industrial power generators, Gov. Josh Stein announced Thursday.

“Investments from international companies are an important part of the state’s economy,” state Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley said in a statement.

The average salary for AVL jobs will be $90,088, above Mecklenburg County’s average private sector wage of $86,830.

AVL considered several markets for its U.S. expansion, AVL President Vince Dicristofaro said, choosing Charlotte because it’s a ”vibrant, tech-forward city.”

“We didn’t just choose a location; we chose a community,” Dicristofaro said.

For its investment, AVL will receive $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund based on the creation of 122 jobs tied to the grant. The OneNC Fund provides financial assistance to local governments to help attract economic investment and to create jobs.

All OneNC grants require a matching grant from local governments.

State Rep. Terry Brown Jr. said AVL’s decision to move to Steele Creek shows it’s becoming “the economic engine for our region.”

The N.C. Department of Commerce, Stein’s office and AVL Manufacturing did not immediately respond to requests for comment about when AVL will open.

About AVL

AVL specializes in the manufacture of custom industrial enclosures for large-format standby power generators used for supplying backup power to large and hyper-scale data centers.

The large metal casings include electric inputs, switchgear and enclosures required for data center servers and equipment.

In addition to data center power generation, AVL’s products find use in several other industries, such as the automotive, automation, construction, and emergency management sectors.
