Chester rest area, stretch of Hwy. 21 closing for upgrades

Two repair projects will mean closures in Chester County.

The I-77 northbound Chester rest area will close for approximately three weeks for upgrades beginning Tuesday, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Construction crews will be removing and installing new entrance doors to the rest area lobby, as well as the men’s and women’s restroom doors, according to a department spokeserson. Minor repairs to materials like tile and roofing also may be undertaken. The average daily traffic count for the northbound Chester facility is 1,900 vehicles, according to the DOT.

A separate DOT project will require lane closures along a 1.6-mile portion of Hwy. 21 in Chester County for a resurfacing project.

Beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, around-the-clock lane closures will be in effect from Wylies Mill Road to Landsford Road. Work will start on the southbound section and then switch to the northbound section.

The project is expected to last approximately one month, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to expect delays.
