▪ VFW Post 3746 on Crawford Road will sponsor a Labor Day Cherokee Casino bus trip Sept. 4. Cost is $40 to ride, and participants get a $30 coupon for the casino. Leave at 7 a.m. from the Kmart parking lot on Cherry Road, Rock Hill, and riders also will be picked up at Bi-Lo in York. Return around 9 p.m. Reservations: 803-366-1910.
▪ Historic Brattonsville award-winning program “By the Sweat of Our Brows,” 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 9 honors African American culture and heritage and is shaped by the descendants of the plantation’s enslaved. The descendants, referred to as the “Seven Sacred Families of Brattonsville,” come together to share their family stories about life in the Carolina Backcountry. The family surnames are Bratton, Crawford, Feaster/Femster, Lowry, Moore, Smith and Thompson. Historically dressed interpreters portray what life was like on the plantation cooking and agricultural demonstrations, story telling and African-American folk games. York’s Gold Hill Baptist Church choir will be singing in the oak grove. Lisa Bratton will talk about her recollections of Historic Brattonsville and lead a discussion on researching family history. The annual event will culminate with the “calling of the names” from the 1843 Probate List. JD’s Wings & Things and Kenny Liles Fish Fry will provide food available for purchase. ▪ The Arts Council of York County is hosting a bus trip the Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem, N.C., to see the exhibit, “Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern” Sept. 21. The bus leaves at 9 a.m. from Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill, and will return at 5 p.m. Tickets: $75, members and $85, non members and include transportation and admission to the museum and the O’Keeffe exhibit. There will be time to shop and eat in Reynolda Village prior to the museum visit.

▪ Humorist Jeanne Robertson brings her brand of humor for a Hospice fundraiser Sept. 7 at Baxter Hood Center, Rock Hill. Robertson headlines Hospice & Community Care’s 5th Annual LOL event, which raises money for under-insured Hospice patients. She is author of three books on humor and can be heard on Sirius XM radio’s Laugh USA family comedy channels. ▪ Espaliers will be the topic for First Friday in the Garden, 11 a.m., Friday at Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 826 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. Espalier is the practice of controlling woody plant growth for ornamental or agricultural purposes by pruning and tying branches to a frame such as a wall or trellis. Clemson Extension Agent Paul Thompson will lead the program.

Recreation
▪ Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism offers Fall Community Bike Ride events. The free events begin with a bike safety check and a review of the rules of the road. All ages welcome, but cyclists must be proficient at riding without training wheels. Helmets are required. Start location details and route information at bikerockhill.com. Carolina Community Actions
The York County Office of Carolina Community Actions Inc. is taking applications to assist low-income families with home energy cooling bills and a variety of other programs and services. Households can help with home energy bills up to $1,000, HVAC unit repairs or replacements, air conditioner units. Other programs and services include rental assistance, General Education Degrees, tuition for Certified Nursing Assistant, job training, child care, medical prescriptions, nutrition education and food vouchers. Appointments available 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday at 546 South Cherry Road, Rock Hill. Family households must be income eligible and provide documentation to qualify. Details: 803-366-5537.
Work program
▪ Carolina Community Actions WIOA program is recruiting ages 17-24 for its work program. All applicants must qualify, be out of school and willing to work for 7 1/2 weeks. Hunger relief
▪ Second Harvest Partners, sponsored by Providence Presbytery, will have hunger relief site, 9 a.m. Friday at First Calvary Baptist Church, 228 Lucky Lane and 9 a.m. Sept. 7 at Boyd Hill Baptist Church, 315 Glenn St., both in Rock Hill. Blood drive
