Special events

▪ Celebrate fall every weekend Sept. 30-Oct. 29 with Fall Frolic on the Anne Springs Close Greenway, featuring wagon rides, a homegrown pumpkin patch, a kiddie corn maze, petting zoo, pedal carts, horse rides, face painting and kayaking. Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sundays. Cost is $10 for members; $12 for non members; $6, seniors and active military; $10, groups of 15 or more. Admission includes wagon rides, kiddie corn maze, petting zoo, pedal carts and other kid-focused activities. Lead-line horse rides and kayaking available for $5. Major credit cards and cash will be accepted at the gate. Food trucks and beverage vendors will be on hand. Special event parking is $5 per car.

▪ York County Girl Scout Day Camp invites students in kindergarten through middle to school to attend an open house, 2-4 p.m. Oct. 1 at Bethelwoods Camp. Girls don’t have to be a scout to attend. No need to RSVP.

▪ The Turning Point of Chester annual fall banquet, 6 p.m. Oct. 7 at Church of The Nazarene Family Life Center 182 Pinckney Street, Chester. Beatrice “Bea” Thompson, Charlotte native and broadcast television and radio personality, will speak. Food catered by Sarge and Crew. ▪ Lando Days, Oct. 7 at Lando History Center featuring a car show, kids area, bands, vendors, barbecue, hot dogs and bake sale. The Chester Gun Reenactors will have demonstrations. Tours of Lando-Manetta Mill History Center, with a collection of original artifacts and documents telling the story of Manetta Mill and people who lived in Lando. Details: 803-789-6361.

Fundraisers

▪ Friends of the Library fiction book sale, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Fort Mill library, 1818 2nd Baxter Crossing. Hardcover and paperback fiction for adults and children’s books are priced from 50 cents-$2. Proceeds benefit all libraries. Details: yclibrary.org.

▪ Fish fry by Twin Tops Fish Camp and outdoor concert, 4:30-7 p.m. Saturday at Friendship United Methodist Church, 1200 Neely Store Road, Rock Hill. Plates: $9 and include fish or chicken strips, fries, hush puppies, slaw and drink. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy music by Abby O'Donnell, Amy Hand, Phyllis and Wes Martin; The Dickson Family + Pam; Molded Clay; Tiffany Vinson and Brandi Chapman. Bring one or more items listed below to help local people in need and hurricane victims and get a brownie or slice of pound cake Items needed: full size toiletry items, new washcloths, disposable razors, flip flops, nail clippers or monetary donations for hurricane victims. Donations distributed through UMCOR – United Methodsit Committee on Relief.

▪ Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Saturday beginning at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 321 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Registration, 9 a.m. and opening ceremony, 9:45 a.m. Proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Association. Register at: alz.org/walk.

▪ Epiphany Lutheran Church sixth annual Oktoberfest, 3-7 p.m. Oct. 7 with tradition German food, beer and music at the church, West Main Street, Rock Hill. There will be a bounce house for children. Free parking and admission. Pumpkins and gourds for sale. Accepting donations of canned goods for local food pantries.

Entertainment

▪ Leslie and Friends kicks off the 13th annual Blues and Jazz Festival Oct. 5 in Baxter Village’s Springmaid Park in Fort Mill. They may sound familiar, having played at the Arts Council’s Annual Gala and at the City Club during the 11th Annual Blues & Jazz Festival.

On Oct. 6 at the Old Town Restauran Crawl, the Arts Council welcomes Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’ Blues to McHale’s Irish Pub. Arnold is a South Carolina bluesman who has played with Muddy Waters, Otis Redding, and BB King. He produced Soul Train with Don Cornelius, and he even played bass on Sanford and Son with Redd Foxx. Returning favorites include the Frost – Meccia Duo, Letron Brantley Duo, Dante Lewis and J’Michael Peeples and Plair returns to the festival. New in 2017 are the Abe Reid Trio and the Amos Hoffman Duo. Cost is $10.

The venue and artists include: McHale’s Irish Pub Mac, Arnold & Plate Full O’ Blues; Five & Dine, Frost - Meccia Duo; Jimmy John’s Black & White Alley, Letron Brantley Duo; Amélie’s, Amos Hoffman Duo; Millstone Pizza + Taphouse, Abe Reid Trio; The Flipside Restaurant Dante Lewis; Gettys Art Center Courtroom, Plair and Thi’s Place on Main, J’Michael Peeples.

Meetings

▪ Rick Huffman, founder and past president of the S.C. Native Plant Society, 7:30 pm. Tuesday will speak to the society’s Piedmont Chapter at the Anne Springs Close Greenway Field Trial Barn. His topic is “The Human Role on the Planet: Sustainability, Native Plants, Applications.” A walk-through of the prairie garden and refreshments begins at 6:30 p.m. Open to the public. Classes
