Jerry Rice Named Greatest NFL Player Ever by Legends Panel: Here's Why

The competition to be named the best NFL player ever is so fierce that it seems hard to believe that a group of people could agree on a single athlete. That is why it is a huge deal that Jerry Rice was named the greatest football player of all time, beating every other icon of the sport.

Why NFL Legends Ranked Jerry Rice as the Greatest Player Ever

In August 2010, the NFL announced that it was set to air a special naming the NFL's greatest players of all time. When it aired on the NFL Network, the legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice was named No. 1. He was a three-time Super Bowl Champion who was named to the All-Pro team 10 times and broke many records. After retiring, he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

An NFL.com article about the ranking noted that the list was decided by a group of former players, coaches, and more. "The blue-ribbon panel includes both current and former NFL coaches, players, and front office personnel, as well as noted NFL media members, Hall of Fame voters, and league historians." The article also detailed the pool of players who were considered. "More than 250 players from the modern and pre-modern era, including current NFL players, were under consideration by the blue-ribbon panel for selection."

The special featured the former head coach Jon Gruden, who vividly explained why Rice deserved the incredible honor. "This is a bad dude right here. He's the most dominant player at his position that I've ever seen. This guy had a 154-mile-per-hour fastball. You could not cover him. He could beat double coverage. You could put man-to-man with help over the top. However you want to try to defend him, he can take a short pass to the house. Probably the greatest receiver after the catch."

After Gruden stopped praising Rice, the special's narrator, Peter Coyote, took over and detailed what made him the greatest ever. "Jerry Rice is king of the mountain. 22,895 receiving yards, 1,549 receptions, 208 touchdowns, the most in history. No one else comes close. Rice dominated the record books, yet his true mastery was of preparation, mind, body, and soul. Rice's eight touchdown catches in the Super Bowl are the most all-time. He won three and was MVP in one. He's a champion, a Hall of Famer, and the number one player on the Top 100."
