10 Years Ago Today Rihanna, Taylor Swift, & Calvin Harris Released a Billboard Hit
While much of the world has been talking about the King of Pop lately, given the recent release of the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, music by no means has forgotten about the pop icons of today. Case in point, Rihanna and Taylor Swift are always grabbing headlines as fans continue to take interest in their music and personal lives (well, Rihanna isn't exactly cranking out new music these days, but I digress).
Speaking of Rihanna and Swift, what some may not know is that they technically collaborated on a song back in 2016 that became a top 10 Billboard hit. Although upon the track's release, their partnership wasn't initially known.
"This Is What You Came for" Was Released 10 Years Ago Today
On April 29, 2016, Calvin Harris debuted "This Is What You Came For" featuring Rihanna. The EDM/pop track was an uptempo smash hit, peaking at #1 on the US Billboard Dance charts and #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its success should come as no surprise, of course, given it came after two of their previous chart-topping collaborations on Rihanna's 2011 Talk that Talk album. "Where Have You Been" and "We Found Love" were both dance hits, with the former peaking on the Billboard Hot 100 at #5 and the latter at #1.
Swift Helped Co-Write "This Is What You Came For"
Now, Swift fits into all of this as she helped co-write "This Is What You Came For," even though that wasn't readily known at first. Per a story from Today:
"When the song dropped, Harris was credited at the songwriter alongside a ‘Nils Sjöberg.' Her [Swift] involvement in the song was kept secret until she revealed her writing credit in a 2020 conversation with Paul McCartney for Rolling Stone."
It's worth noting that at the time the song was conceived, Harris and Swift were dating. However, after the couple split, songwriting credits have been in dispute as Harris refuted the extent of her involvement. As shared with Variety via a post from Harris:
"I wrote the music, produced the song, arranged it and cut the vocals though. And initially she wanted it kept secret, hence the pseudonym. Hurtful to me at this point that her and her team would go so far out of their way to try and make ME look bad at this stage though."
Just to add, Swift is also credited with backing vocals on the song. Meaning, you technically hear her on the track with Rihanna. Head over to your preferred streaming service to listen to the song and see if you can hear Swift for yourself.
