'Ferrari' Joins Netflix 3 Years After Box Office Flop

Michael Mann's 2023 sports biopic Ferrari will arrive on Netflix on May 24th, almost three years after a disappointing run at the box office.

The film centers around Enzo Ferrari, the real-life entrepreneur who founded the car company that still dominates motorsport today. With a script from Troy Kennedy Martin, the film stars Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, and Jack O'Connell.

Ferrari takes place in the late '50s, following Enzo Ferrari as he attempts to develop the perfect vehicle to compete in the 1957 Mile Miglia-a prestigious racing tournament that takes place on the roads of Italy. It's a typical underdog story that does an excellent job of blending the true story of Ferrari's turbulent past with a compelling, entertaining narrative that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2023, where it was picked up by Neon and later distributed in the United States. The reviews out of Venice were fairly strong, but they weren't enough to push the film to box office success.

Against its high budget of $95 million, Ferrari only made $43 million at the box office. It was a commercial failure; the film ended up making no profit for Neon, who had clearly been impressed by its strong festival reviews but overestimated how much appetite there was for this story among general audiences.

Despite flopping, Ferrari remains hugely popular with critics. Many reviews praised Adam Driver's lead performance, with many pundits even predicting at the time that he would be nominated for an Academy Award. The film's poor reception ultimately squandered those chances, and Ferrari received no nominations.

Reviews also praised Michael Mann's propulsive direction, particularly during the film's many racing scenes. The filmmaker blends dynamic action with grounded, intimate character drama to make a film that's just as exciting as it is moving.

Ferrari will be available to stream on Netflix from May 24 in the United States with a valid subscription. Alternatively, it can be purchased or rented on any major VOD service-such as Apple TV or Amazon Prime Video.
