Uber Is Tapping Into the Travel Industry Like Never Before
Uber has been synonymous with ground transportation for nearly two decades. It's convenient, and arguably the best way to get around, whether you're in or out of town.
When the likes of DoorDash and Grubhub entered the food delivery app space, Uber followed suit with Uber Eats, and soon elbowed its way to the top as the go-to choice for those late-night munchies and lazy Sundays.
Now, Uber's upping its game with a radical upgrade that will make traveling that much easier.
At its sixth annual GO-GET Global Product Event in New York City, Uber announced Hotels on Uber, allowing users to book hotel stays right in the Uber app. The platform will allow users to search, browse, and book from a growing selection of more than 700,000 hotels worldwide, thanks to a partnership with Expedia Group.
Pretty soon, users will have even more choices when Uber partners with Vrbo later this year.
How Does Uber Hotels Work?
According to Uber, users will notice the new "Hotels" icon on the home screen.
It's pretty self-explanatory from there: You enter your destination, explore nearby hotels in either a map or list view. The app will also let you refine your search with filters that include guest ratings, hotel class, brand, price, and amenities, among others.
After selecting your hotel, Uber says the upfront price includes all taxes, fees, and applied discounts. Users will also see how many Uber Credits they can earn when booking.
After selecting a hotel, the app will break down the price and refund policies. And, like when you confirm a ride, you can confirm your reservation with a few taps using your default payment method or what's in your Uber Wallet.
What Else Is New With Uber?
Uber introduced a handful of upgrades that might have some users saying, "Finally!" such as Travel Mode and Eats for the Way.
Travel Mode will curate a list of places -- like local favorites, points of interest, the tourist hot-spots -- so you're just one click away from visiting as an out-of-town guest. With Uber Eats, users in Travel Mode will soon see curated dining recommendations. If you fancy something on that list, you'll soon be able to book a reservation with OpenTable.
Eats for the Way, however, just might be the biggest game-changer, because it will allow users to soon reserve an Uber Black or Uber Black SUV that will scoop up your favorite snack or drink before arriving to pick you up.

For example, once your Uber Reserve is confirmed, you can now tap "add Uber Eats" and have your coffee or small grub picked up before your Uber Black or Uber Black SUV swoops you up to take you to the airport or your meeting that could have been a Slack or an email.
Uber says that, in the coming weeks, Eats for the Way will be available in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Diego, and San Francisco, with more cities added down the road.
