‘Maycember Madness' Is Kicking Off Soon-These Are the Month's Biggest Home Projects, According to Yelp
If it feels like the year has been off to a slow start, get ready-things are about to pick up. According to Yelp, May is one of the busiest months of the year for families.
It's a stretch that doesn't just include major holidays like Mother's Day and Memorial Day. For parents, it's also the start of that classic (and chaotic) end-of-school-year whirlwind packed with recitals, graduations and prepping for summer camp. In other words, schedules fill up and things get hectic quickly, giving it a similar feel to the holiday rush-just during spring instead. It's why the month has become commonly known as "Maycember."
"Maycember captures something our data has shown for years," Yelp trend expert Tara Lewis says. "May is when many hit a tipping point and start looking for professional help."
To help even further with planning ahead and keeping things as stress-free as possible, Yelp is sharing new data before the madness kicks off that offers a glimpse into the most popular projects and services requested this time of year. Based on Yelp search and project request data, these are the biggest home projects coming in May.
Backyard Maintenance
May is when the weather finally feels warm enough to lounge in the yard again. From hosting outdoors for Mother's Day and Memorial Day to gearing up to make it feel like the ultimate oasis, Yelp says backyard projects increase with it in preparation. It's when:
- Gardener and landscaper maintenance project requests hit their highest point of the year
- Pool maintenance and pool cleaning requests rise in demand ahead of summer
Getting the House Into Shape
While the main focus of the warm months seems like it's mainly outdoor spaces, Yelp's data shows the inside matters just as much. The online platform found:
- Searches for home organizing services skyrocketed 767 percent from April to May 2025
- Declutter services and home cleaning projects requests both jumped
- Handyman project requests increased 200 percent, peaking in May
"It starts with Mother's Day," Lewis says, explaining "families want the house to look great, the yard to be in shape, the celebration to feel special-and then the momentum carries straight through graduation season and into summer prep."
Before the month ramps up, this data makes it easy to start brainstorming to-do lists and plan ahead now. That way, you can try and avoid any of the unnecessary chaos that comes with the hustle and bustle of Maycember.
