LeBron James Reflects on Michael Jordan's Influence Amid NBA Playoff Push

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers are currently taking on the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA playoffs, and James' Lakers are on the brink of advancing to the next round.

The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer is looking to win a fifth NBA championship, an accomplishment that would only further the ever-present debate about the greatest of all time.

James is often compared to Michael Jordan, who transformed the NBA and the sport of basketball in the 1990s by winning six titles with the Chicago Bulls. The MJ/LeBron debate spans generations, sparking conversation among sports fans all over the world.

LeBron has spoken about his admiration for Michael Jordan and how he's viewed him as an inspiration, and in the twilight of his career he's reflecting on how he compares to one of the all-time greats.

LeBron: 'I Hope I Made Him Proud'

"I hope I made him proud at least, wearing that No. 23," James said in an interview with ESPN's Dave McMenamin. LeBron noted that he looked up to Jordan, but stopped short of comparing the two of them as basketball players because their styles of play are so different.

"I have been a point-forward/forward-point my whole life. I have always looked for the pass. MJ kind of looked for the shot. Not kind of, he did. He looked for the shot," James said about the six-time champion.

"There are a lot of things where I would say my game is a lot different and a little better than his...but he was great. We're both great. We're both great basketball players."

James added that both players have excelled in their own ways, and that the debate on the greatest player of all time is a "very tiring conversation."

"You can look at both of us and say that you love both of us without trying to [expletive] on the other person," he said. "But I know for sure that I've done my part in this journey."

Michael Jordan Inspired LeBron James

James said that he was inspired by Jordan as a child, and that the Chicago Bulls legend was among several figures he looked up to on his journey to stardom.

"I never thought that I could be him, but I dreamed of the opportunity to live in the shoes that he lived in," LeBron noted.

"I dreamed of being able to be in a big game and hit a game winner as the clock went down. I dreamed of having my own sneaker. I dreamed of flying through the air like him. I dreamed of people screaming my name. Everything that he did. I needed inspiration from certain people in music and in sports during my upbringing. I needed that."

Michael Jordan retired from the NBA for the third and final time in 2003 at the age of 40, following his 15th NBA season. James is currently in his 23rd NBA season at 41, putting their careers in close proximity.

We'll see if this year's playoff run will change the minds of some fans who hold the opinion that Jordan is the greatest of all time.
