Top 100 Vocalists of All Time: Queen Frontman Freddie Mercury Takes No. 1 Spot

After polling more than 50 musicians, Consequence of Sound released their ranking of the "100 Best Vocalists of All Time."

Topping the list is Freddie Mercury, the legendary lead singer of Queen.

"I don't know a single singer who doesn't think of Freddy Mercury when you think of 'The Greats,'" said indie singer August Ponthier, one of the artists surveyed in the making of this definitive list. "The raw power of his voice - moving from emotion to emotion like a gymnast who always sticks the landing - was never seen before and will probably never be seen again."

Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara, had an incredible four-octave range that spanned from bass low F to soprano high F. His voice has fascinated scientists for decades, with some pinning its X-factor to his unique vibrato and others to his use of subharmonics, a technique used by Tuvan throat singers.

Beyond his technical abilities, Mercury was known for his incredible ability to emote and his consummate showmanship. This unique set of skills is on full display at Queen's 1985 performance at Live Aid. The 21-minute set is often cited as the greatest rock performance of all time.

Mercury, who passed away at 45 from AIDS in 1991, left an enduring legacy and a beloved catalog of music.

The rest of the top 4 is rounded out by Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Marvin Gaye. Robert Plant, of Led Zeppelin, comes in at no. 5 and is the highest-ranked living artist on the list. Beyoncè, ranked at no. 6, is the youngest person in the top 10.
