Triple H's WWE Future Was Reportedly Internally Questioned Before Wrestlemania 42
Triple H's future with WWE was reportedly in question before WrestleMania 42 weekend.
Earlier this week, WWE President Nick Khan announced that Triple H (real name Paul Levesque) signed a new deal to maintain his position as the company's Chief Content Officer.
The WWE Hall of Famer took over as the head of WWE's creative team in 2022, after Vince McMahon retired during an investigation into misconduct allegations. Triple H is married to Vince's daughter, Stephanie McMahon.
Interestingly, there were reportedly internal doubts about The Game's future in WWE ahead of WrestleMania 42, Bryan Alvarez said on Wrestling Observer Live (h/t Andrew Ravens of WrestlingNews.co):
"I will say that this year leading up to WrestleMania, unlike previous years when fans were discussing it, it was a topic of conversation in WWE leading up to this WrestleMania, and it wasn't a topic, and I want to make this very clear because I know there's going to be stories written about this.
The people discussing this within WWE, they were not discussing this in the sense that we think he's doing a horrible job, we need him to be replaced. It was being discussed specifically because so much stuff was being done at the last second by people outside. The decision to bring in Pat McAfee.
The decision to insert him into the storyline. The thing with Jelly Roll. And actually, I had heard about it prior to that as well with other things that had come from above. It was just kind of there was a feeling that perhaps these people keep getting involved, and why would they be getting involved if they had so much faith in this guy?
And there were people that thought, ‘I don't know if this guy is going to be around this time next year.' Turns out he ends up getting his deal extended, so he will be around, but it was definitely a discussion point that this may not be his thing for a long period of time. It could be over soon."
WWE was sold to TKO Group Holdings in Sept. 2023. Though the McMahon family no longer runs the show, Triple H's higher-ups are obviously pleased enough with his performance as the Chief Content Officer.
Triple H Retired From In-Ring Competition in 2022
Long before he entered the corporate side of WWE, Triple H had long established himself as one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time. He won 14 world championships, tying him with former Evolution ally Randy Orton for third-most in history behind John Cena (17) and Ric Flair (16).
As a leader of the D-Generation X stable in the '90s, he was instrumental in helping WWE defeat the now-defunct rival WCW promotion during the Monday Night Wars.
Triple H helped WWE make a successful transition into the Attitude Era, a turning point in the battle with WCW. The company eventually moved into the Ruthless Aggression Era, where Triple H took over as the leader of the iconic Evolution stable.
A heart issue forced Triple H to retire from full-time competition in 2022. Though he no longer competes in the ring, Triple H remains a driving force behind WWE's global success.
