A New Dog Crate Just Passed Crash Tests Most Pet Travel Gear Never Takes

Traveling with pets often involves a compromise between convenience and safety. Many pet parents spend time researching harnesses, carriers and travel accessories, assuming the products they buy have been rigorously tested. In reality, a surprising amount of pet travel gear has never gone through the same type of crash testing that consumers expect from products designed to protect human passengers.

That gap becomes even more noticeable for larger dogs. Small pets can often ride in carriers or travel systems designed for compact spaces, but owners of medium and large breeds typically have fewer options. Some rely on wire crates that slide around in cargo areas while others use soft-sided alternatives that prioritize portability over protection. As road trips, outdoor adventures and pet-friendly travel continue growing in popularity, many owners are looking for products that place safety at the center of the design process.

Tavo Pets is hoping to address that concern with the launch of a new pet cargo crate that recently completed crash testing standards rarely seen in the pet travel category. The company's newest product was designed specifically for vehicle cargo areas while providing a secure travel space for dogs weighing up to 100 pounds.

Tavo Pets recently announced the launch of the Everett Pet Cargo Crate, a travel crate designed for use in the cargo areas of SUVs and trucks. According to the company, the crate was crash-tested using standards aligned with the United Nations ECE R129 child restraint testing protocols.

The Everett crate is designed for dogs up to 100 pounds and installs directly into a vehicle's cargo space with adjustable anchor straps and forged-aluminum carabiners. Rather than taking up valuable backseat room, the system creates a dedicated travel area in the rear of the vehicle.

Safety may be the headline feature, but the company also focused heavily on day-to-day usability. The crate includes a self-lifting door that opens beyond 100 degrees for easier access. The interior features a durable mattress pad designed to withstand scratching and chewing while maintaining comfort during long rides.

Tavo says the crate was created to function as a traveling home base rather than simply a transport container. The design incorporates extensive ventilation openings to promote airflow and help pets stay comfortable during road trips.

The launch reflects a growing interest in pet travel products that mirror the safety standards consumers expect elsewhere. As more families include dogs on vacations and weekend adventures, products focused on secure transportation continue to attract attention.

Many pet owners already invest in travel essentials before hitting the road. Portable accessories like this Heart to Tail pet backpack with lounge from Aldi can help keep smaller pets comfortable during outings, while practical accessories such as this portable travel bowl from Aldi make hydration easier during long drives.

The Everett takes a different approach by focusing specifically on what happens once a pet is inside the vehicle.

The crate will begin shipping on June 22 and carries a retail price of approximately $1,000. That places it firmly in the premium category, but Tavo believes pet owners are increasingly willing to invest in products designed around safety and durability.

Whether the broader industry follows suit remains to be seen. What is clear is that crash-tested pet travel gear remains relatively uncommon, making products like Everett stand out in a crowded travel accessories market. For pet parents who spend significant time on the road with their dogs, the launch signals that vehicle safety is becoming a bigger part of the conversation.
