Apple TV Quietly Canceled One of Its Most-Watched Shows
Earlier this year Apple TV made the surprising decision to cancel Palm Royale after just two seasons.
The show's first season received 11 Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for Wiig, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Burnett.
"In 1969, an ambitious woman aspires to cross the line between the haves and have-nots to secure her seat at America's most exclusive and treacherous table: Palm Beach high society," reads the tagline for the show.
Season 1 of Palm Royale Dominated Viewership
In addition to its strong list of awards nominations including lead actress Kristin Wiig's nomination for the Annual Actor Awards, as well as a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, it was also one of the most-watched shows of the season.
The first season of the show was the most-watched non-Netflix title, landing at No. 5 with 262.9 million minutes watched in its first full week of availability.
Despite the strong viewership and critical acclaim, Apple TV opted to cancel the show after the second season.
'Palm Royale' Cancellation Was Fitting End for 1 Character
Rosy Cordero of Deadline wrote that while the show could have continued, it received a fitting end for one chaaracter.
"Regarding the storyline, Palm Royale could've continued but the ending gave the show a conclusion," she penned. "And there was a special tribute to Burnett's character, Norma Dellacorte, in her planned final episode. As Norma, Burnett sang a warm rendition of "Something Good" in the Season 2 finale."
The show's first season received a meager 55% from critics and 73% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and the second season wasn't much better at just 60% from critics and 69% from audiences, respectively.
