Signs Your Cat Sees You as a Friend
You may wish your cat could come right out say, "You're my best friend," but since they can't, you need to be able to recognize signs your cat loves you. If you're curious how to tell if your cat is deeply bonded to you, these affectionate behaviors can reveal where you stand.
1. They rub against your leg
True friendship doesn't always need words-and for cats, they show you how happy they are to be around you in a sneakier, more intimate way.
"When a cat rubs against your legs, they are marking you with their scent, which is a true badge of honor," Dr. Cahn gushes. "It is both a social greeting and a comforting way for your cat to reconnect with you after you have been away."
By leaving their scent on you, your cat is essentially claiming you as part of their inner circle, so take this as a sign of friendship that they feel deeply connected to you.
2. They meow at your bedside each morning
Just as friends look forward to seeing each other, some cats make a point of seeking out their favorite human first thing in the morning. So, if you've ever asked yourself, "What's it mean when my cat meows?" It's basically your kitty's way of greeting you and shows you've earned a special place in their heart.
"If your cat's basic needs are met and they are meowing, they are most likely wanting attention or affection from you," Dr. Cahn says. "In fact, adult cats mostly use this form of vocalization to 'talk' to humans rather than other cats."
3. They sleep at your feet
Another cute way your cat shows you affection that you might miss is by laying on your feet. Experts say this shows your cat's attachment to you and that they cherish your companionship.
"There is no greater compliment than a cat falling asleep on or near you," Dr. Cahn reveals. "Sleep is one of a cat's more vulnerable states, so when they settle close by, they are showing that they feel safe in your presence."
Dr. Cahn notes there are a bunch of variations of this cat behavior sign. While some kitties may call your feet their pillow, others may opt to sleep next to your chair, or snuggle up on you in your lap. "Overall, the message is the same: they want to be near you while they relax," Dr. Cahn says.
4. They let you pet them
Not all cats are into physical affection, and most kitties won't let just any random person touch them. "When a cat allows you to pet them, especially when they seek it out, this means you have a deep bond with your cat," Dr. Cahn says. "Predictable and positive human interactions are important for a cat's well-being, and petting can be a lovely bonding moment when the cat is enjoying it."
Dr. Cahn says that it's important to take this trust in your friendshp seriously and really lean into it. "One of the best ways to keep affection positive is to let your cat guide the interaction and respect their body language when they have had enough," Dr. Cahn notes.

5. They play with you
Even older cats love a good playdate with their best friend! "Play is not only a crucial outlet for a cat's natural hunting instincts, but it is also one of the ways they demonstrate affection toward their human," Dr. Cahn reveals. "When your cat initiates play or eagerly joins in, they are choosing to share an enjoyable activity with you."
6. They headbutt you
One more heartfelt cat behavior that means your cat sees you as someone special is when they headbutt you (AKA bunting)."
"This is one of the cutest ways cats show affection to their owners," Dr. Cahn explains. "By firmly pressing or rubbing their face against your leg, arm or head, they are depositing their scent and marking you as their territory and a friend."
7. They lick you
If your cat sees you as more than just their owner, they'll lick you. While a cat's rough, sandpaper-like tongue may not feel as pleasant as a dog's kisses, this grooming behavior is often a sign of trust, affection and friendship.
Dr. Cahn explains that cats use a behavior known as allogrooming to strengthen bonds with those they trust most. So when your cat licks your hand, arm or even your hair, they're treating you like one of their closest companions and saying you're their favorite person, which shows you've earned a special place in their world.
8. They softly blink at you
A slow blink may seem like a small gesture, but it can speak volumes about the bond you share with your cat. "A slow blink is one of the most intimate ways a cat shows contentment and relaxation," Dr. Cahn says. "When your cat looks at you deliberately and softly closes and opens their eyes, they are communicating that they feel safe and at ease with you, showing you're their friend."
Try letting your cat know you feel the same way by doing it back. "Your cat may appreciate it if you reciprocate by slow blinking back," Dr. Cahn adds.
9. They follow you from room to room
This show of friendship is not just for the dogs. "Cats often follow their owners because of curiosity, routine, or simply because they want to be close to you," Dr. Cahn says. "Even if your cat is not sitting directly on your lap, choosing to stay nearby can be a way to participate in your day and keep you in their social circle."
