Grammy-nominated Rapper Says "Ultimate Goal" Is to Play Prince in a Biopic
Numbers don't lie, and they just proved that the Michael Jackson film, Michael, is officially the biggest music biopic of all time. And now, following its success, one rapper has his eyes set on playing another musical legend who is no longer with us, Prince.
Playing Prince is quite the lofty goal. The Purple One is one of the most prolific entertainers in history, with an epic catalog of music to his name that spans generations. That being said, anyone wanting to take on the tall order of playing him on the big screen has some pretty big shoes to fill. So, who is the rapper who wants a shot at portraying the "Let's Go Crazy" singer?
Vic Mensa Wants to Play Prince in a Biopic
On June 12, a short video began circulating on social media via the Rock the Bells accounts. In the clip, rapper Vic Mensa is speaking with an interviewer. Although the interviewer is not that audible, Mensa shares his desire to play Prince in a movie. Specifically, he states, "Yeah, I want to play Prince in a biopic. That's my ultimate goal." Here's a look at the brief interview.
Who Is Vic Mensa?
For those who aren't as familiar with Mensa, he's a Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist from Chicago. His biggest hits have been "U Mad" featuring Kanye West and "Reverse" featuring G-Eazy. He also received a Grammy nomination for his songwriting credit on West's "All Day," and a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding New Artist.
Now, outside of music, Mensa is actually a bona fide actor. Most notably, he's starred as the reformed bad boy Jamal in the popular series The Chi. He's also been spotted portraying a business mentor named Quentin in the Peacock series Bel-Air. And in a stroke of irony, back in 2020, he starred as a character named Prince in the crime drama Akilla's Escape.
Will there be a Prince Biopic?
With all that being said, there is no official word that a Prince biopic is in the works. In fact, it would be rather surprising if that were to ever become the case, given how notoriously private he was in life. Plus, Prince's classic movie, Purple Rain, has been hailed as a semi-autobiographical film.
Additionally, it's worth noting that reports have circulated that there is a Prince project in the works. It's a Prince jukebox musical film that's being produced by Oscar-winning Sinners director Ryan Coogler. As of publication, there's no release date set for the film.
