49 Years Ago, A Folk-Rock Hit Was Written in 20 Minutes to Win a Bet

It's not unusual for songwriters to write songs under pressure, mainly from label executives or their own personal goals to achieve a big hit. In a rare - although perfectly fitting -instance, Crosby, Stills & Nash (later Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) wrote the song "Just a Song Before I Go" while under pressure from a drug dealer, over a much-needed $500.

Graham Nash, who wrote the song, which went to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977, revealed the inspiration came from a dealer, who he later revealed (when enough time had passed, presumably) was a friend of his that he was staying with in Hawaii, right before Hurricane Anita took ahold of the island.

"The origin was this: I was in the Hawaiian Islands and I had a couple of hours to waste before I had to catch a plane back to Los Angeles," Nash told Music Radarin 2022. I was at the home of a friend of mine, Spider was his name, and as I got up to leave he said, ‘You know what? You're supposed to be a big-shot songwriter. I bet you can't write a song.'"

"I said, ‘What?' He said, ‘I bet you can't write a song just before you go home.' I said, ‘Really? You bet? How much do you bet?' He said, ‘$500 you can't write a song just before you leave.'"

Whether it was ego, the impending hurricane, or the vast amount of money, Nash wrote the song in 20 minutes - although his CSN bandmate, the late David Crosby, claimed it took just 15 minutes.

The breezy, island-inspired folk record has a perfectly chosen title - a quick stroke of creativity before Nash set off. Although inspired by leaving loved ones behind for tour, the musician hopped on the plane, and, although unknowingly, set off on a new career trajectory.

"I still have his $500 because it was written on a bet, really. It was the biggest single hit that CSN ever had, I believe," Nash said. "Like my friend Joe Wall says, ‘If I'd have known it was going to be such a big hit I'd have written a better song.'"
