The Friends of the York County Library’s used book store, Friends Books on Main, is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday-Saturdays. The store at 206 E. Main St., Rock Hill, is staffed by volunteers.
Books, DVDs and CDs are priced at $2, children’s books are $1, and mass market paperbacks are 50 cents. Proceeds benefit York County Libraries. For information, go to www.yclibrary.org/booksales.
Special events
▪ Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Eta Alpha Omega Chapter dedicated a little free library May 21 at Roosevelt Park, 312 Mobley St., Clover. The little free library is part of the organization’s “1908 Playground Project,” which helps provide children with safe places to play. The little free library is a structure that houses free books for the community to read. Individuals can take a book with no obligation to return it and leave books for others.
▪ The World of Irises is the topic of First Friday in the Garden, 11 a.m. Friday at the Glencairn Learning Center, 826 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. Master Gardener Ann Mozingo of River Hills will give the presentation. Free and open to the public.
▪ Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America will have an informational table from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Old Town Farmers Market at Fountain Park in Rock Hill. For information, go to momsdemandaction.org.
▪ A workshop on the “Five Wishes Booklet” will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Union Baptist Church, S.C. 274 and Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. Agape Senior will provide information on making personal medical and future care wishes known. Free and open to the public. For information, call 803-366-1556.
▪ Master’s Car Club 14th annual car show will be Saturday at Burns Chevrolet Cadillac, 2515 Cherry Road, Rock Hill. ▪ Clover High School Spring Fling and Beach Bash will be 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the school. The event features local vendors, live entertainment, carnival games, inflatables, cornhole and a canjam tournament. Food truck vendors include Spoon’s Barbecue, Vito’s Pizza, Two Chicks and a Truck, Smax Flatbread Grill and Pelican’s Snoballs. Free admission. Rain location will be in the gym. ▪ The McCelvey Center’s Lowry Family Theater will host two Grand Ole McCelvey concerts featuring local string ensemble Cottonwood and the Grammy-award winning Peasall Sisters. Specializing in traditional Carolina Piedmont bluegrass music, Cottonwood will perform 7-9 p.m. June 11. The five-piece string ensemble includes Dan Hinson on guitar, Don Jones on mandolin, Zach Lemhouse on fiddle, Mark Mears on banjo, and Tony Helms on bass. Tickets are $10. The Grammy and Country Music Association award-winning Peasall Sisters return to the Grand Ole McCelvey 7-9 p.m. July 8. The Peasall Sisters have performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. Tickets are $15 online and at the door.
