▪ An organ recital by Murray Forbes Somerville, former Harvard University organist and choirmaster, will be 7 p.m. Sunday in Byrnes Auditorium at Winthrop University. He will perform on the D.B Johnson Memorial Organ. The recital will feature two patriotic pieces – “My Country, ’Tis of Thee” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” – arranged by composer John Knowles Paine, who was appointed Harvard’s first university organist and choirmaster. Somerville’s wife, Hazel, will join him at the organ for Carson Cooman’s “York Concertato.” The program also includes four other selections, including works by composer Johann Sebastian Bach. It is one of a series of summer recitals presented by the Charlotte Chapter of the American Guild of Organists to benefit the Stigall Scholarship program, which provides money for organ lessons for area high school students. Donations will be taken at the door following the program.

▪ VFW Post 3746 will have a Fourth of July benefit dance, 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday at the VFW Post, West Main Street, Rock Hill. Admission, $15, singles; $25, couples. Proceeds to the building fund.
▪ Deadline to submit entries for the 2016 Underexposed Film Festival is July 15. Films selected will be screened in November in Rock Hill. Films have a run time of less than 45 minutes. Categories include narrative, animation, experimental and documentary. Awards total $2,300. ▪ An event to promote a safe and violence-free summer for youth and the community, Put the Guns Down, will be 1-5 p.m. July 9 at the American Legion fairgrounds, 155 S. Cherry Road. ▪ Odessa’s Seniorcise class will host a Summer Bazaar, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. July 9 at Emmett Scott Center, 801 Crawford Road with clothing, housewares, electronics, furniture and toys. ▪ The McCelvey Center’s Lowry Family Theater will host the Grammy and Country Music Association award-winning Peasall Sisters return to the Grand Ole McCelvey 7-9 p.m. July 8. The Peasall Sisters have performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. Tickets are $15 online and at the door. ▪ The Yorkville Historical Society will meet 7:30 p.m. Thursday at McCelvey Center, York. Ann Allison will recognized for her involvement in the society's efforts for many years. Jan Ramsey will provide a history and biographical background on Allison.
Camp
▪ Chester County Clemson Extension Service 4-H Science on the Move campaign will host “Can Your Own Food” day camp for students in 6-12th grades. The camp will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 6-7 at the Fort Lawn Community Center. Participants will learn to make jelly or jams and how to can it. Cost is only $10. Classes
▪ The application deadline has been extended for Master Gardener training for York, Chester and Lancaster counties until Thursday. Classes are held at the York County Clemson Extension office, 120 N. Congress St., York. Classes are on Tuesdays Aug. 2 through Nov. 8. The mission of the Clemson Extension Master Gardener Program is train knowledgeable volunteers to assist the local horticulture agent in informing fellow South Carolinians about sound gardening practices. ▪ U.S. Soccer referee instructors will present the classroom portion of referee training 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 7 at Manchester Meadows. Registration is required at screferees.gameofficials.net. Class 16266 is for age 14 and older. Class 16349 is designed for recreational soccer and attendees must be 11 years old. ▪ York County Free Clinic is the only clinic offering free medical services to qualified uninsured York County residents. The success is due largely to the amazing team of volunteers.
