The 13th annual Countdown to Kindergarten, a free educational festival for rising kindergarteners, will be 5-7 p.m. Aug. 4 in downtown Rock Hill. Main Street Children’s Museum will offer free limited admission during the event. Children’s musician Roger Day will perform.

More than 30 community exhibitors will be on Main Street to provide activities that encourage young learners to get off to a good start.

Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures will provide free pediatric dental screenings, River Hills Lake Wylie Lions Club will provide free vision screenings, and Beginnings SC will offer free hearing screenings.

Information about after-school programs will be available and kids can explore a school bus. Community exhibitors will offer activities and school supply giveaways. Sign-up for a library card, visit the York County Book Mobile and Friends of the York County Library bookstore on Main Street.

Special events

▪ The Spencer Estates Neighborhood Association annual “National Night Out” Ice Cream Social will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at Spencer Park on Eastwood Drive. Bring homemade ice cream, cake or other dessert and lawn chairs. Beverages and paper and plastic products will be provided. Bring a guest.

▪ Celebration Place Church will have a classic car show, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at 2869 Chester Highway, York. There will be trophies, awards and T-shirts. Hot dog plates available.

Fundraisers

▪ Hospice & Community Care fourth annual Labor of Love (LOL) event Sept. 1 will feature Anita Renfroe, a break-out YouTube sensation, who rose to fame when she sang of everything a mother says to her children in a single day to the tune of “The William Tell Overture.” The show will be 7 p.m. at Baxter Hood Center in Rock Hill. An opening reception begins at 6 p.m. She is the wife of a pastor and featured regularly on Good Morning America. She also is a speaker on the Woman of Faith Farewell Tour. Tickets are $25 and available at HospiceCommunityCare.org

▪ The Friends of the York County Library is continuing its Buy One, Get One Free Paperback Sale 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday at Friends Books on Main, 206 East Main St., Rock Hill. Saturday, a bag of paperbacks is $10. Bags are provided. The sale applies to all mass market fiction and nonfiction paperbacks, regularly priced at 50 cents. Proceeds to library programs.

The Bethel Rural Fire District Board will meet 7 p.m. Aug. 3 at Station 1.

James Gill Knox III, a past President of the Chester District Genealogical Society, will speak on the history of Richburg. A native of Chester County, he is as principal of Lewisville High School. ▪ The York County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs will meet 7 p.m. Thursday at the administration building, 7900 Park Place Road in the East York Industrial Park, off S.C. 5 in York. The board will consider a change in the By-Laws which defines our fiscal year as July 1-June 30.

▪ Shakespeare Carolina Presents “Miss Julie” by August Strindberg, Thursday-July 31 and Aug.4-7, in the Black Box in Johnson Hall at Winthrop University. This ‘upstairs, downstairs’ story explores the dark romance between a young countess, Miss Julie, and her father’s footman, Jean. Kristin, Jean’s fiancé, adds further intriguing dynamics to Miss Julie’s venture upon the edge of an emotional precipice. Performances will 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and Aug. 4, 5, 6 and 3 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 7. Seating is Limited. Clubs

▪ The Newcomers Club of York County, a women’s social and civic minded organization, will meet 11:30 a.m. Aug. 10 at Rock Hill Operations Center, South Anderson Road, Rock Hill.
