Clover Back-to-School bash Friday at the stadium

Clover School District and the Roosevelt Community Watch will host back-to-school bashes in Clover before school starts. Each will have free school supplies, entertainment, food and recreation.

Clover School District’s annual Back-to-School Bash will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium.

School supplies will be given to students in the district. In addition to school supplies, there will be a “Meet the Eagles” event where members of various teams throughout the distrct will be introduced.

More than 600 backpacks filled with supplies and nearly 300 pairs of shoes were handed out at last year’s event. The bash will feature games, entertainment, food, face painting, an opportunity for free eye exams and more.

An addition to this year’s event is a school spirit contest. The school best represented at the event will receive a prize, while one student from each school will also win an award.

To donate supplies, there are drop off points at Clover Community Bank branches in Clover and Lake Wylie. Supplies can also be dropped off at the district office.

▪ Fall vegetable crops will be the topic of First Friday in the Garden, 11 a.m. Friday at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 826 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. Clemson Extension Agent Paul Thompson will lead the program. Free and open to the public.

▪ Roosevelt Community Watch will host a Back-to-School Bash, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Roosevelt Park, 312 Mobley St., Clover. Children are given school supplies at the event which includes food, games, music and recreation. ▪ The 13th annual Countdown to Kindergarten, a free educational festival for rising kindergartners, will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday in downtown Rock Hill. Main Street Children’s Museum will offer free limited admission during the event. Children’s musician Roger Day will perform. More than 30 community exhibitors will be on Main Street to provide activities that encourage young learners to get off to a good start.

▪ The Spencer Estates Neighborhood Association annual “National Night Out” Ice Cream Social will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at Spencer Park on Eastwood Drive. Bring homemade ice cream, cake or other dessert and lawn chairs. Beverages and paper and plastic products will be provided. Bring a guest.

Fundraisers

▪ Hospice & Community Care fourth annual Labor of Love (LOL) event Sept. 1 will feature Anita Renfroe, a break-out YouTube sensation, who rose to fame when she sang of everything a mother says to her children in a single day to the tune of “The William Tell Overture.” The show will be 7 p.m. at Baxter Hood Center in Rock Hill. An opening reception begins at 6 p.m. She is the wife of a pastor and featured regularly on “Good Morning America.” She also is a speaker on the Woman of Faith Farewell Tour. Tickets are $25 and available at HospiceCommunityCare.org

Clubs

▪ The Newcomers Club of York County, a women’s social and civic minded organization, will meet 11:30 a.m. Aug. 10 at Rock Hill Operations Center, South Anderson Road, Rock Hill. Battalion Chief, Trey Hovis of the Rock Hill Fire Department will speak. His crew and the ladder truck will be there. Cost is $12 all inclusive. After school programs

▪ The Discovery Station and Emmett Scott Center after school programs, operated by the Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, for children in K5 through 5th grade are taking applications for the 2016-2017 school year. The programs offer homework assistance, literacy development, character education, arts, outdoor recreation and other fun activities. Both operate on the Rock Hill school district calendar. Discovery Station is at Fewell Park Recreation Center, 1204 Alexander Road, with bus transportation available from Richmond Drive Elementary. The Emmett Scott Center after school program is located at the Emmett Scott Recreation Center, 801 Crawford Road with bus transportation available from several schools. ▪ The Clemson Extension Service in York County in partnership with the City of Rock Hill will host the 4-H Come Grow With Me in the Garden series, September-December for ages 6-14 years. Classes will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave, Rock Hill. The classes will help youth cultivate awareness, knowledge, appreciation, and concern for the natural environment while learning about horticulture, vegetable gardening and leadership through creative activities and a service project. Auditions

▪ The York County Choral Society will hold auditions for its 37th concert performance season from 6-8:30 p.m. Aug. 25 and from 5:30-6:45 p.m. Sept. 1 in the choir room at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1320 India Hook Road, Rock Hill. There are openings in all vocal parts. Weekly rehearsals begin 7-9:30 p.m. Sept.1 at the church. Some prior choral experience is required and singers from high school age through adult are welcome. Health screenings

▪ Piedmont Medical Center will hold a heart-risk assessment screening 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday in the hospital Women’s Tower Resource Center. Participants must be fasting after midnight. Basic screening includes cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure at no cost. An EKG can be added to this screening for $39.95. Registration required by calling 888-457-5211.

Recreation

▪ Registration for Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s Fall Youth Sports will be Monday-Aug. 19. The following are offered:

Recreation Soccer for ages 5-13 Sept. 1. Fee is $42 and includes team shirt and socks.

Football for ages 7-10 as of Sept. 1. Fee is $77 and includes new uniform, socks, helmet sticker, and year-end award.

Those who participated in the spring youth sports leagues will receive a $7 reduction in the registration fee because they purchased insurance in the spring.

Registration will be taken during office hours Monday-Friday at Manchester Meadows, the Cherry Park tower, the PRT Office (Room 390) at City Hall, and at the four recreation centers.

First time players must bring a copy of their birth certificate to register. Returning players may register online at www.CityofRockHill.com/PRT if there is a current email address on file. A brochure with program details is available at www.CityofRockHill.com/PRT. Volunteer coaches are also needed for these programs. Classes

Class 16266 is for age 14 and older. Class 16349 is designed for recreational soccer and attendees must be 11 years old.
