Special events
▪ Fall vegetable crops will be the topic of First Friday in the Garden, 11 a.m. Friday at the Glencairn Garden Learning Center, 826 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. Clemson Extension Agent Paul Thompson will lead the program. Free and open to the public.
▪ Alpha Kappa Alpha SororityEta Alpha Omega’s One Million Backpack Drive, will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Walmart Super Centers in Newport, 4875 Old York Road, and Galleria Mall, 2377 Dave Lyle Blvd. The One Million Backpack “Stuff the Bus Event” is to collect school supplies and materials that will be donated to local schools. Supplies and financial donations will be accepted at both sites.
▪ Clover School District’s annual Back-to-School Bash will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium. School supplies will be given to students in the district. In addition to school supplies, there will be a “Meet the Eagles” event where members of various teams throughout the district will be introduced. The bash will feature games, entertainment, food, face painting, an opportunity for free eye exams and more. An addition to this year’s event is a school spirit contest. The school best represented at the event will receive a prize, while one student from each school will also win an award.
▪ Roosevelt Community Watch will host a Back-to-School Bash, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Roosevelt Park, 312 Mobley St., Clover. Children are given school supplies at the event which includes food, games, music and recreation. ▪ The Oakland Baptist Ministry at 1021 Charlotte Ave. (next to the Bridal and Formal Gallery) will provide free school uniforms for students in Rock Hill middle schools. Uniform distribution will be 1-3 p.m. Aug. 10 and Aug. 13. Proof of Rock Hill residency is required.
Meetings
▪ The Chester District Genealogical Society annual meeting will be held 1 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant, 5724 Lancaster Highway, Fort Lawn. Cost is $20. James Gill Knox III, a past president of the Chester District Genealogical Society, will speak on the history of Richburg. A native of Chester County, he is the principal of Lewisville High School. Clubs
▪ The Ballroom Dance Club will meet 7:30-10:20 p.m. Aug. 19 in the Oak Room, Fort Mill Golf Course, 101 Country Club Drive. Guests: $15, couples; $7.50, singles. Free 30-minute dance lesson. School registration
▪ Kindergarten registration is underway at Old Pointe Elementary School for children who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1. Registration is 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Bring the child’s birth certificate, immunization records and proof of residency.
Open house
▪ Freedom Montessori School will have an open house, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the school, 215 E. Main St., Rock Hill. It’s the only licensed early childhood education Montessori in Rock Hill. There will be music and activities. For information, call 803-327-7885 or go to freedommontessori.org.
Grants
▪ The deadline to apply for small grants for individual artists, non-profit organizations and schools in York County through the Arts Council of York County is 5 p.m. Sept. 1. The Small Grants Program provides support for small or pilot arts activities, artist professional development, new and developing programs or organizations, and special projects of high artistic quality that cannot support themselves. Organizations and individual artists may request up to $1,000 per grant and may get up to two grants in a calendar year. Prospective applicants must discuss the proposed project with the executive director at least 10 days in advance of the deadline date. Health screenings
▪ Piedmont Medical Center will hold a heart-risk assessment screening 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday in the hospital Women’s Tower Resource Center. Participants must be fasting after midnight. Basic screening includes cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure at no cost. An EKG can be added to this screening for $39.95. Registration required by calling 888-457-5211.
Reunions
▪ Rock Hill High School class of 1959 will meet 1 p.m. Aug. 9 for fellowship and lunch at the Golden Corral, Anderson Road. All classmates, spouses and friends are invited.
