York County churches remember Last Supper with Maundy Thursday services

Churches around York, Chester and Lancaster counties will take time Thursday to remember the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus shared with his apostles before he was taken off to be crucified.

Maundy Thursday is part of what’s known as “Holy Week” for many Christian churches, the days leading up to Easter Sunday, the day Christians believe Jesus was resurrected from the dead. It is considered the holiest day on the Christian calendar.

Here are several opportunities to join in local Maundy Thursday services:

AME ZION

New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, Dave Lyle Boulevard, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday worship, 7 p.m.

ANGLICAN

St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Fort Mill: The congregations of St. Barnabas and Lake Wylie Lutheran will share joint Maundy Thursday service, 7 p.m. at Lake Wylie Lutheran.

ARP

Ebenezer ARP Church, Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday Communion service, 7 p.m.

First ARP Church, East White Street, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday Tenebrae service and Communion, 7 p.m.

Tirzah ARP Church, Mount Gallant Road, York: Maundy Thursday Communion service, 7 p.m.

EPISCOPAL

Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, Caldwell Street, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday Holy Eucharist, foot washing and Stripping of the Altar, 7 p.m.

LUTHERAN

Grace Lutheran Church, Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday service, 7 p.m.

Lake Wylie Lutheran Church, S.C. 160 West at Gold Hill Road, Fort Mill: Maundy Thursday service, 7 p.m.

METHODIST

India Hook United Methodist Church, Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday worship, 7 p.m., with Rock Hill Central Charge and Hermon Presbyterian at India Hook.

Mount Holly United Methodist Church, Mount Holly Road, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday service, 7 p.m.

Woodland United Methodist Church, Cherry Road, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday service, 6:30 p.m. Prayer Labyrinth available for meditation one hour before and after the service.

PRESBYTERIAN

Allison Creek Presbyterian Church, S.C. 274, York: Palm Special Maundy Thursday service, 7 p.m., to dedicate the historical maker detailing the African-American cemetery on the church grounds. The congregations of New Home and Liberty Hill AME Zion and Union Baptist churches will participate. Descendants of people buried in the cemetery began these three congregations. An offering of Bibles, hymnals and money will be collected to send to the Christ Missionary Church in Duala, Liberia. Some descendants from the Allison Creek cemetery are members of this congregation in Liberia.

First Presbyterian Church, East Main Street, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday Communion and Tenebrae service, 7 p.m.

Grace Presbyterian Church, S.C. 160 West, Fort Mill: Maundy Thursday service, 7 p.m., with a twist on the Last Supper drama – a visit with the women in the kitchen of the Upper Room, those women who knew Jesus best.

Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, Oakland Avenue, Rock Hill: Maundy Thursday Communion service, 7 p.m.

Purity Presbyterian Church, Wylie Street, Chester: Fifth Maundy Thursday service, 7 p.m.

Tirzah Presbyterian Church, Tirzah Road, York: Maundy Thursday Communion service, 7 p.m.

WESLEYAN

First Wesleyan Church, York Highway, York: “Journey to the Cross,” 6-9 p.m. Thursday, 6:30-9 p.m. Friday and 2:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Free and open to the public.
