Realtors’ grant helps Chester honor ‘The Chiefs’ TV series
The Piedmont Regional Association of Realtors has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the National Association of Realtors’ Smart Growth Program to support activities that create and expand sustainable communities.
The grant will be used by the Chester Downtown Development Association to celebrate the making of “The Chiefs” television mini-series in Chester in 1983 that starred Charleston Heston, Billy Dee Williams, Keith Carradine and Wayne Rogers.
“This grant will help support the design and implementation of a Chiefs Better Block with street scenes in downtown Chester that resemble the original sets, transforming Chester into Delano, Ga.,” said Dorothea France, the associations executive director.
The Chester Downtown Development Association has organized two previous Better Block events in downtown Chester to show the potential for underutilized buildings and mixed use of public space. Walkability and access are two areas that will be addressed as well.
The Chiefs Better Block will take place Saturday, April 11. “Chiefs” author Stuart Woods and director Jerry London will be present.
For more information, call the Chester Downtown Development Association at 803-385-4803.
