Walmart gives raises to SC employees

Walmart is giving pay raises to 13,186 workers in South Carolina for the pay period that started April 4. The pay raise will be reflected in pay checks delivered April 23.

With the raises, Walmart workers earn at least $1.75 an hour above the state and federal minimum wage, according to company officials.

The new full-time average hourly wage in South Carolina is now $12.99.

As of April 4, all Walmart workers earn at least $9 per hour and by February 2016 all current associates will earn at least $10 per hour.

“This means everything to me. I look not just at this pay change, but the next one as well,” said Howard Welch, overnight stocker at the Lake Wylie Walmart Supercenter. “If I can work my way up to a supervisor or management position, I’ll be in a completely different place personally then.”

Walmart is also raising the starting wage for some department managers to at least $13/hour this summer and at least $15/hour early next year.
