Tega Cay’s newest cookie shop: Crumbl Cookies has landed in South Carolina
Cole Hegerhorst was in college at Utah State University when his roommate had a hankering for cookies.
After trial-and-error with cookie recipes, Hegerhorst’s roommate and a cousin co-founded Crumbl Cookies nearly 2 1/2 years ago. The business now boasts franchises nationwide.
The 100th Crumbl Cookies opened in Tega Cay in August — the first store in South Carolina. It’s co-owned by Hegerhorst, 27, and his wife Savannah, 24. The nearest store to the Tega Cay site is in Raleigh, N.C.
“People’s first reaction is they’re blown away,” Hegerhorst said. “It’s really yummy cookies, crispy on the outside, warn on the inside.”
The classic chocolate chip cookie is the shop’s go-to, Hegerhorst said.
A few other flavors on the menu include an almond flavored pink sugar cookie, cinnamon pretzel, and graham cracker topped with butter frosting. They even had a shark-themed cookie for Shark Week.
The Tega Cay shop has 80 types of cookies, and half-pint ice cream flavored after popular cookies. They even have a cookie-classic beverage: milk and chocolate milk.
Hegerhorst goes to work at 5 o’clock each morning with his baking crew to start the cookies, he said. Trays of cookies cool on a rack while others bake in the oven.
Halfway through the morning, bakers are lining to-go boxes with the desserts. Customers can order in-store, through curbside pickup and delivery.
“It’s optimized right now to be successful during the coronavirus and to make sure people can get cookies,” Hegerhorst said. “It still satisfies the sweet tooth, even during this time.”
Hegerhorst said he chose Tega Cay because of how fast the area is growing, and he plans to open more stores.
The store is open 8 a.m.-10 p.m. at 2435 Hwy. 160, Suite 108 in Tega Cay. Visit https://crumblcookies.com/ for ordering and details.
