Tega Cay has some of the highest home values and income levels in the region. The coming year could provide more places for Tega Cay residents to work or play, closer to home.

Jim Stalford is chair of the city’s economic development commission. Stalford sees large-scale commercial growth and entertainment in the city’s near future.

Here’s what else he sees happening:

What are some of the biggest business openings, projects or success stories in Tega Cay for 2021?

Tega Cay continues to see very low vacancies for retail space and new buildings are being leased as quick as they are built. There are several great success stories in Tega Cay. The way the community gets behind local businesses is second to none. The connectivity for Tega Cay makes it ideal for the residences to stay local. Two great examples are Model A Brewery and X Golf.

What’s a major business development effort that will happen in 2022 that folks may not know much about yet?

As we move into 2022 larger scale commercial construction will be the key. Everyone sees a smaller retail center being built out on Stonecrest, but the city has additional areas that are high visibility that will soon be under development with retail and entertainment combined. We are working with several groups to fast track these areas. At the same time, we are working to attract and build out complimentary businesses to maximize exposure.

What’s the biggest business challenge Tega Cay faces in 2022?

The biggest challenge we have had is getting one developer to handle a large track of land. Second is telling the story of Tega Cay, with high valued demographics and desire for the residence to stay local. We have the people and the destination to support larger scale development for companies that want direct access to the local community.

What businesses will folks see more of Tega Cay at the end of 2022 than they do now?

Entertainment will be at the forefront of what will be built out. There has been a big void in restaurants and entertainment areas that fit this highly social community.
