Here’s what you need to know about the Airport Overlook and the latest update on the upcoming changes.
Why is the overlook moving?
The Airport Overlook is moving due to the airport’s North End Around Taxiway Project, which includes airfield improvements ahead of the airport’s plans for a new runway.
The runway, which could be completed by 2027 according to the airport’s latest projections, would run through the old overlook site at 7300 Airport Overlook Drive.
When will the new spot open?
The new Airport Overlook will open in 2024, according to the Charlotte airport. And the new overlook site will open before the old spot closes, the airport said in a statement Thursday.
Where will the new airport overlook be?
Charlotte Douglas has not released the exact location of the new overlook. But the new site will be close to the current location off Old Dowd Road, and will remain on airport property, according to CLT.
What’s included at the new site?
The new Airport Overlook site will include paved parking and an expanded Food Truck staging area, according to CLT.
The food truck program was first launched at the airport in 2019. The airport hosts food trucks at the current overlook location Fridays through Sundays seasonally.
When is the current overlook open?
The overlook is free and open to the public every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
How long has the airport had an overlook?
The current overlook opened in 1989.
The original airport airstrip, Morris Field, was also a popular spot for watching flights, according to the airport. At the time, the old terminal on Yorkmont Road had a roof-top dining room and an area with viewfinder, according to CLT.
