These four Carowinds attractions won’t reopen. When will we know what’s coming next?

A cluster of Carowinds attractions closed this week as the park prepares to announce what will replace them.

Yo-Yo, Dodgem, Southern Star and Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare: 3Z Arena closed Aug. 1. Park communications director Courtney Weber said in an e-mail Carowinds will have major announcements on Aug. 11 related to the 2023 operating season.

The four closed rides and attractions sit near one another. Some have lengthy histories at the park.

Dodgem was a bumper car ride. Bumper cars at Carowinds date back to 1979. What in recent years was called Southern Start opened in 1986 as Frenzoid. The pendulum style ship ride looped guests a full 360 degrees, at up to 80 feet.

Plants vs. Zombies was a 3D interactive arena game where guests sided with plants or zombies, then battled other guests with laser shooters. It opened in 2016. The arena there previously hosted a Days of Thunder ride and other movie-based attractions.

Yo-Yo was a rotating family swing ride.

Carowinds is a 400-acre theme park on the North Carolina-South Carolina border, in both Charlotte and Fort Mill. The park has more than 60 rides, attractions and stage shows plus a 26-acre water park.
