Springs Memorial wins awards for heart, stroke care
Springs Memorial Hospital of Lancaster received two awards from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association.
The hospital received the Heart Failure Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing quality improvement measures from the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation’s secondary prevention guidelines for patients with heart failure.
The hospital also received the American Stroke Association’s Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate care.
Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure is a quality improvement program that helps hospital teams provide up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing hospital re-admissions for heart failure patients.
Springs Memorial Hospital earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients. These measures include evaluation of the patient, proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies such as ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta-blockers, diuretics and anticoagulants. Before patients are discharged, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health and have follow-up visits.
To receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for strokes hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality measures.
These quality measures are designed to help hospital teams provide care that speeds recovery and reduces death and disability for stroke patients. The measures focus on appropriate use of guideline-based care for stroke patients, including aggressive use of medications such as clot-busting and anti-clotting drugs, blood thinners and cholesterol-reducing drugs, preventive action for deep vein thrombosis and stop-smoking counseling.
“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and this award demonstrates our commitment to ensuring patients receive care based on nationally-respected clinical guidelines,” said Karen Martin, RN, chief nursing officer at Springs Memorial.
