Lake Wylie will likely get new water and sewer service with Blue Granite condemnation
Lake Wylie may get a new water and sewer provider.
York County released a statement Friday afternoon announcing the planned condemnation of the Blue Granite Water Company system in Lake Wylie.
Blue Granite, formerly Carolina Water Service, has for years served the area through water first drawn in Rock Hill and then sent via the county system. The system has grown along with Lake Wylie, one of the faster-growing residential areas in York County and the region.
Blue Granite now serves more than 4,000 customers in Lake Wylie, or about 10,000 people.
The county announcement notes negotiations with Blue Granite for more than a year, system and cost assessments, engineering and environmental studies. York County Council is expected to take up the first of three needed readings to fund acquisition that would cost about $36 million.
According to the county statement, Lake Wylie customers would see a surcharge on monthly bills to cover costs but users likely would see monthly bill decreases with the removal of Blue Granite.
“We expect this purchase to provide additional long-term cost savings to water/sewer customers by providing a more stable rate environment,” reads the release.
York County water and sewer customers wouldn’t see cost impacts, nor would residents on well and septic service. The overhaul is likely to take several months.
