UPS laying off more workers at west Charlotte site. Now, nearly 100 will lose jobs

Nearly 100 UPS workers are losing their jobs at a west Charlotte sorting facility.

The layoff includes 76 part-time hourly employees, 21 part-time managers and two full-time managers at UPS’ 1815 W. Pointe Drive facility. The job losses are “due to changes in our network,” according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) filed Tuesday with the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The job losses impact a single shift day sort at the package sorting facility, UPS told The Charlotte Observer.

The job cuts are effective May 2. UPS will continue operating from the facility, but UPS said it is unclear how many workers will remain at the site.

”We are working to place as many employees as possible in other positions,” UPS told the Observer. “We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support.”

The company is reconfiguring its U.S. network, and launching multi-year efficiency initiatives to drive approximately $1 billion in savings, according to the company’s fourth-quarter earnings report released Jan. 30. That includes closing some facilities, UPS told the Observer.

UPS also plans to lower its volume with its largest customer, Amazon, by 50% by the second half of 2026.

UPS is laying off 99 workers at its west Charlotte facility, effective May 2.

Employees may be offered work in other positions where possible, UPS human resources director Bria Woods said in the report.

Last March, UPS laid off 75 night sort employees at the same facility, citing network volume loss, The Charlotte Observer reported.

UPS is one of the world’s largest companies with 2024 revenue of $91.1 billion and nearly 500,000 employees in more than 200 countries.
