German company bringing over 70 jobs to Charlotte with new $50M factory

A Berlin producer of high-voltage power systems is opening its first U.S. manufacturing plant in Charlotte with 74 new jobs for the region.

HSP US LLC, an American subsidiary of Trench Group GmbH, is investing more than $50 million over five years to begin operations in early 2026, the city of Charlotte announced in a news release.

Mayor Vi Lyles said in a statement the city welcomed the new jobs HSP is bringing to Charlotte, which will strengthen the area’s status as a growing energy hub. “This is a continuation of our city’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and build new relationships in Germany,” she said.

This is the latest in a spate of jobs announcements for the Charlotte region.

PPG, a Fortune 500 producer of paints and coatings, is investing $380 million to open a manufacturing center in Shelby, the company and Gov. Josh Stein announced Thursday morning. It comes with more than 100 jobs. And Coinbase, the nation’s largest crypto exchange, said in late April it is expanding to Charlotte. The company plans to hire over 130 people.

Foreign companies in the Charlotte region

The Charlotte region is home to more than 1,000 foreign-owned companies, according to the city. German-based businesses employ more than 19,000 people around Charlotte, the city stated.

The facility will make bushings, an important component in high-voltage power transformers. It will be in southwest Charlotte near Siemens Energy’s new manufacturing facility.

HSP USA is paying an average wage of $77,315. Some of those positions include machinists, engineers and management. The company will start filling positions in the fall.

HSP is working with Central Piedmont Community College to start a workforce training and apprenticeship program.

By coming to Charlotte, Trench Group is strengthening its presence in North America by laying a foundation for energy infrastructure growth in the region, according to CEO Bahadir Basdere. “In doing so, we contribute to the stability and national security of the countries in North America,” Basdere stated.

Charlotte’s electric and engineering workforce and business environment made the city an ideal location, Nils von Dietman, CEO of HSP US stated. The proximity to customers also played a role, he added.

Charlotte officials worked with Mecklenburg County, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and Duke Energy to bring the new plant to the area.

Over the past two years, Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have collaborated on multiple economic development projects.

This includes the relocation and expansion of Siemens Energy, TTX, alpitronic Americas Inc., Albemarle Corp., and Solve Industrial Motion Group. With the HSP US LLC’s manufacturing location, the city and county have brought more than $508 million in capital investment and 1,535 new jobs, according to the city news release.
