Bojangles is taking its Southern biscuits to the Big Apple in NYC expansion
Bojangles is bringing its iconic Southern flavor to the New York City area with expansion plans to open over 50 restaurants.
The Charlotte-based chicken-and-biscuit chain will open 20 stores over 10 years in the city, Bojangles said Wednesday. The first location will open this winter in Brooklyn.
Construction of the new store is underway in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood, Bojangles said.
“Our team has extensive experience running quick-service concepts across New York and Connecticut,” said Bojangles franchise owner Habib Hashimi of Hashimi Holding Corp.
As part of Bojangles’ broader expansion across the New York metropolitan area, the company also recently signed an agreement with a franchisee to add 35 stores throughout New Jersey.
It’s all part of Bojangles’ strategy to grow in key metropolitan markets, according to the company. And it’s a second homecoming for Bojangles, which had opened stores in the city during the 1980s, according to the company.
“It’s a monumental moment, now that we’re entering the New York metropolitan area again,” Bojangles CEO Jose Armario said. “We couldn’t be more excited to see what this next chapter holds.”
More franchising opportunities also are available throughout New York state, Bojangles said.
Bojangles joins another popular Charlotte-based chain, Krispy Kreme, that made its New York City debut in 2020.
Bojangles’ growth plans
Founded in 1977, Bojangles has 266 company-operated locations and 561 franchised units.
In 2019, the fast-food chain was sold for $539 million to two New York firms, Durational Capital Management LP and The Jordan Company L.P. Since 2019, Bojangles has grown from more than 600 restaurants in 12 states to over 800 in 20 states.
This year, Bojangles debuted in Las Vegas, Houston and New Jersey, with expansion plans also in California.
In June, Bojangles moved into its $5.7 million, 61,448-square-foot headquarters at 500 Forest Point Circle in south Charlotte, less than 2 miles from the former 23,693-square-foot office at 9432 Southern Pine Blvd. The new corporate support center includes space for Bojangles’ employees working on menu and equipment innovation, kitchen design and quality assurance.
Also in June, The Wall Street Journal said Bojangles is working with investment bankers on a possible $1.5 billion sale. Company officials have declined to comment on the report, saying it is focused on the brand’s commitment to its hometown and future growth plans.
