Popular PA convenience store chain lands closest location to Charlotte yet

A popular pitstop with made-to-order food and customizable coffee has plans to expand in the Charlotte region.

Sheetz is eyeing a site near Weddington Road in Concord, the Altoona, Pennsylvania, gas station chain confirmed. It is early in the process and too soon to share additional details regarding the project, Sheetz said in a statement to The Charlotte Observer. Sheetz submitted a plan review site at 4830 Weddington last month to Cabarrus County for the 24-hour gas station.

Sheetz began its North Carolina expansion in April 2004 with the opening of its store in Walkertown, near Winston-Salem northeast of Charlotte.

There are now 140 Sheetz stores in North Carolina, including six in the Charlotte region in Salisbury, Statesville and Hickory. The Concord store, about 20 miles from uptown Charlotte, would be the closest location to Charlotte.

“We appreciate the strong interest from residents in the Charlotte area and their enthusiasm for Sheetz entering this market,” the company said.

Sheetz offers restaurant-quality dining experience with mobile pickup lanes, indoor and outdoor seating, grocery offerings, touch-free restrooms and free Wi-Fi.

Sheetz is basically a fast-food restaurant that sells gas, one person said on a Reddit describing Sheetz.

Sheetz competes with other gas and convenience stores, including Oklahoma-based QuikTrip, and Texas-based 7-Eleven and Buc-ee’s, which expects to open its first North Carolina location next year in Mebane.

Another popular Pennsylvania convenience chain is Sheetz rival Wawa. It also is expanding in North Carolina, with about 14 stores in the eastern part of the state. So far, none have been announced in the Charlotte region.

More about Sheetz

Sheetz also is expanding in the Midwest.

This month, the convenience chain said it is investing nearly $1 billion to add 100 stores over the next 10 years in Indiana, and creating more than 3,000 jobs.

Sheetz has about 3,700 workers in North Carolina, according to the company. In general, each Sheetz store employs about 30 people with the majority working full-time, Sheetz said.

Across North Carolina, the average hourly wage for Sheetz employees is about $14 per hour, $17 for supervisors and $23 for assistant managers.

The family-owned company has over 830 stores in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland and Michigan.
